Schuster: Numancia Have Nothing To Lose

With just twenty four hours until Real Madrid kick off their first home match of the season manager Bernd Schuster had time today to talk about the clash with Numancia, as well as other issues…

On paper it’s little against large, David vs Goliath, but in reality Bernd Schuster knows that when Numancia step into the Santiago Bernabéu this Sunday the pressure will all be on his side.

He said: “Numancia have nothing to lose, they will be freer than ever. What worries me about Numancia is firstly that they managed to beat Barcelona in their opening game and secondly they are a newly promoted side in the early stages of their campaign.”

Indeed, coming into the season it looked like a baptism of fire for newly promoted Numancia but after picking up three points in their opening game they will no doubt be full of confidence come Sunday, a fact Schuster acknowledges.

“Gaining your first points is very important, it is an obvious philosophy. It worries me that in the first two games, in which they thought they might not take any points from, they already have three,” he explained.

Whilst the manager is no doubt fully focused on the game ahead there has been much talk this week about Real Madrid’s possible purchases in the January transfer window, a subject Schuster did not shy away from.

“Right now I am not concerned, I am not thinking about the winter transfer window. I have a squad of 24 players, a very important game and I have a lot of confidence in these players,” he assured.

Already this week sporting director Predrag Mijatovic has declared that there will no winter signings at the club, but today Schuster nearly contradicted him by saying they will be heading into the window with open eyes.

“We [Schuster and Mijatovic] have spoken about the subject and we have clear ideas. We know about the difficulties of signing in January but we go into the period with open eyes because we have a free position,” said the boss.

Speaking about a less debatable subject the manager did have some good news for fans of the club, regarding the captain Raúl. He said about the striker, “Without doubt he has recovered from the problems that he had last week against Deportivo. The rest has done him good and he is recovered enough to play tomorrow.”

The game tomorrow will be the curtain raiser in the Bernabéu and Schuster is under no illusion about what result the fans expect.

“We will go out with desire and the people will come with desire to see the first game in the Bernabéu. We will go game by game to win,” he concluded.
