DETROIT, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Matt Millen should step down as general manager of the Detroit Lions following a disappointing start to the NFL season, vice chairman William Clay Ford Jr told reporters on Monday. The comments by the Ford Motor Co. executive chairman, whose father has owned the team for more than four decades, were made after the long-suffering Lions went 0-3 thanks to a 31-13 defeat by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. "I think it's been disappointing and if it were in my authority, I would make a significant changes," Ford told reporters at a Detroit Economic Club event. When asked by a reporter if Millen should leave the Lions, Ford replied, "Yes, I do." Millen, who won super bowls as an NFL linebacker, has a 31-84 record as general manager over seven seasons. He received a five-year contract extension in 2005 despite the team's struggles, making him a target for fan outrage with some even walking out of a home game in protest. Um, DUH!
Ouch. I feel for you Lions fans. The Millen era needs to end. He hasn't done anything as a G.M., really, other than land Calvin and Roy. And a blind squirrely could have found Calvin.
