Marion fills up the stats sheet for sure, but is he worth another Max contract considering his age and skills? I don't think so personally, not only due to his age, he's certainly not a Max-Player for the Heat as he's not going to be that difference maker. I can understand why the Magic gave Lewis a big deal as he was one of their 'final' pieces, or they think he is, but with Marion's contract on the books it's hard to rebuild around Wade. Your thoughts? -Petey
Personally, I don't think he is worth a max deal. He does alot of great things, like rebound. But his defense isn't that great. His scoring isn't consistent because of that ugly, randomly consistent, jumper and a lack of the ability to create for himself. At his age, he shouldn't be getting a max. He has a similiar game to Josh Smith and Gerald Wallace, however both those guys have a better offense skillset compared to Shawn, and both also play stellar defense. Not saying that Shawn sucks, but rather he doesn't deserve a MAX contract.
I don't think Marion was ever worth a max contract but close. I don't think he is worth as much now and would say 10-14 million max. I'm not sure what he thinks he is worth but even as a UFA I doubt he gets a max deal next year.
Definitely not worth a max contract. He is still a solid player that does a lot of the small things for a team, and I think any team would love having him. But not a max contract. (ie. 18-20+ mill) I'd say 12-13 mill would be about right.
I wouldn't say so. He's still a great player, but he's what, 30 now, so he's about to be exiting prime. I still think he can be VERY productive and still be a 16/10 type of guy, but I don't see that as max contract worthy. And DW, he's still a damn solid defensive player. The only reason he sometimes looks bad is because he was always playing out of position in Phoenix. He's naturally a SF and Phoenix had him at PF. Obviously it's going to be tough playing defense when you're that undersized. However, he's still a great pick-pocket and a great shot blocker, especially when you consier his size. His man defense might have lost a step along the way, but he's still by no means a bad defensive player.
Yeah I was gonna say, he was one of Phoenix's better defenders. But no I don't think he is worth max, I'd put him around 9-10 million a year
You guys are right. I overexaggerated my personal bias a tad because I remeber whenever we played Phoenix, Lamar would abuse him and I thought that was sad. But you guys are right, overall he is pretty darn good.
Yea Lamar did abuse him. I would agree that against PFs Marion is maybe even a below average defender. However Marion is better defending smaller guys and Odom is capable of playing PF or SF. Against regular sized SFs Marion is good defensively.
Yea...just a bit. I'll agree, Marion does have issues guarding taller people. And especially if you consider that Odom is 6'10" and has a wing-span even taller, of course the 6'7" Marion is going to have issues.
He's a good player. Good players don't deserve max contracts. Sometimes, good players get max contracts. But they don't deserve them. Marion is a 10-13 million dollar a year player right now, IMO (and that's even overpaying). He doesn't fit the role of the leading star on a crappy team, but he's still one of the best complimentary stars in the NBA, and in the right situation he can do just as well as he did in Phoenix.
