Who do you think is going to shine the most as a rookie and end up with the award at the end of the season? Personally I think it will be O.J. Mayo.
I think it's going to go to either Beasley or Oden. I think Beasley is going to come right in and be an 18-20ppg player and also get 7-9 rebounds as well, while I think Oden will instantly establish himself as one of the leagues best bigs almost immediately (at least defensively), and come somewhere near 13/10 and 2-3 blocks.
I love Mayo, but he's on a team with a glut of guards. I'm sure he's going to get a whole ton of minutes, but they're going to have to find a way to keep Crittenton, Lowry and Conley happy. Plus ya know, some guy named Rudy Gay also spends time at the SG.
i would guess beasley, from a statistical standpoint. mayo wont win it if he shoots .417 or something.
If Oden is putting up the numbers I know he can put up, and the Blazers are in the playoffs, I don't see how you can't give it to him.
*Taking a Page out of Denny's book* No sir, Gay did not play SG last year http://www.82games.com/0708/07MEM11C.HTM
Was there any other rookie that deserved it last year? Maybe Horford, but that's about the only other guy that I can think of.
See, that chart is contradictory to itself. In the first chart, it shows a 0% in the minutes (or I assume that's what it is) category. However, if you look at all the other charts, there's production for him at the SG position. Maybe I'm just misinterpreting the chart, but it appears to be somewhat contradictory to itself.
Horford did average about a double double and his team made the playoffs. Durant was known as a "chucker" but he averaged 20+ppg And unfortunately ppg usually "means more" in these awards
The statistics are skewed because he played very minimal minutes at those positions. So little it can't even be considered 1% of his total minutes played If you don't like that one look at this one. http://www.82games.com/0708/07MEM11B.HTM
This is true, people put far too much emphasis on PPG anymore. However, I'm not going to put too much weight on the fact that the Hawks made the playoffs, because they did with a putrid record (37-45 I think) and they did it in a putrid conference. I don't know if they win 30 games out West. As much as I like the Hawks team, the fact that they could barely make the playoffs in the East leads me to think they would have even less success in the juggernaut known as the Western Conference.
Ok, thanks for clarifying that. Well, then I take back that part of my previous statement, however, I still don't see Mayo winning the ROY over Oden or Beasley.
I agree the Hawks got lucky getting into the playoffs. But the Hawks franchise has been laughable lately, and making the playoffs, no matter how much easier it was to in the eastern conference, shouldn't be taken lightly for the franchise. And Horford was a big contributor in getting them there
When looking at the other guards on the Grizzlies roster, I think Mayo is much better than the rest. Mayo and Gay will carry that offense and I see Mayo being the #2/#1 option on the team. He's going to put up huge numbers.
I agree that making the playoffs shouldn't be taken lightly, but I do take it with a grain of salt because of the conference they play in. It might not be fair on my part to do that, but when the conference is as weak as it is, I have to. The fact that only what, 3 teams in the East could have made the playoffs in the West this past season, yea, that says A LOT about how pitiful a conference is. I realize the Hawks can't control that, but hey, I can't help be critical because of it. I do give Horford credit though, he was a large part of them making the playoffs. He did give them that inside toughness they would have otherwise lacked. Also to his credit, he played all season out of position, playing the center spot instead of his natural spot at the four.
