see this comes down to what I was talking about before. Sure if you got in a time machine they'd be more athletic and therefore better dunkers. Jumpshooters or skilled players?? not so fast. There was a lot more contact allowed in those days, it wouldn't be so easy in those 2 regards. But if you talk about taking those players and having them grown in today's game, they'd benefit more from better transportation (much easier to fly in a private chartered plane from Boston to Chicago, or LA than a commercial flight or bus or train to Philly and NY), training (some of those guys had part time jobs due to the low pay and didn't train at all in the off season, that's what training camp was for ), Nutrition (wow, no beer or cigarettes at halftime anymore ). So given equal opportunities, a lot of good and great players from previous era's would still be good/great.
LOL this is great, if we can talk this much in the first round, wonder what it will be like by the 7th round
First off, I don't care about contact man. Look at bob Cousy he was 6'1 and weighed 175. Bill Russell was 220 pounds at 6'10. I mean Devin Brown is 6'5 210 pounds and quite athletic. Put someone like Desmond Mason who is 6'5 222 pounds, he weighs the same as the Bill Russell a center. And Desmond Mason is ripped. I'm sure he could deal with the contact from 185 pound guys lol. Yea, it is totally different. I totally agree that there were probably players that had part time jobs and jobs during the off season to make dues. I'm guessin that was the case for most of the players that were on the bench. and exactly they probably didn't train at all during the offseason. That is why I think put a guy like Trevor Ariza, or Tyrus Thomas, someone who looks like they might not accomplish much at all in this era. If you put them in the 50s or 60s, they would be flying past guys and slamming it down lol. Well I completely agree, give Bill Russell proper nutrition, and weight training and millions of dollars, get the guy jacked like Ben Wallace, and yea the guy would be able to compete better. So are we talking about the original player with their body build? or legendary players with potential circumstances?
you have to put a players accomplishments into context of their era. otherwise this all era draft will be 10 guys who played before 1990 and a collection of 'athletes' who would 'dominate' players from previous eras if they traveled in a time machine. Bill Russell is a great player, regardless of his size. Players in all sports are bigger, stronger and train a thousands times better than their counterparts who plays 30+ years ago. That's a moot point. In an all-era draft you have to look at what the player accomplished in his era vs his contemporaries. Wilt lapped the field like no one ever has plain and simple. I've been in all era drafts before and the voting always goes to the guy who has a few legends and a ton of recent stars because "they're more athletic, bigger, play better D yadda, yadda, yadda but it's essentially because more recent players are known. To me it's boring. I like to have a variety of good players from all eras.
That's why I went Wilt over Russell. Everyone looks at Russell and sees how small he is and ignores the fact that he is the greatest team defender ever and the greatest winner in the history of sport. Russell today would make everyone else a jump shooter because he would block and alter that many shots.
Hey! Stop mentioning names of undrafted players! I was thinking of taking Ty Thomas next round and now everyone is thinking about him.
no, because he never did, lol. I don't know if you ever got to watch D Rob play in his prime, but one thing that he and Ewing always got criticized for was not showing up when it counts..............you could've gotten him in the 2nd or 3rd round possibly..........He was a great player, but there are a couple of big men who come to mind that were better (aside from the obvious ones)............
Yes they were....although Barkley was picked too early, I'd take him over D Rob to build a squad around for the simple fact that he didn't shrink like Robinson did. Robinson isn't even a top 20 player all time imo........... EDIT To be honest I'm surprised you didn't take ya boy Kobe, lol. I'd take Kobe over D Rob any day of the week for various reasons.........
