Good question. Actually, the name is Columbian Missourian....good thing I wasn't in an interview with Katie Couric when I said Daily Missourian : D It's a Columbia, MO newspaper.
I just don't know what to think of her. On one hand, I can't even name the newspaper that comes to my house. I just think of it as "the newspaper." On the other hand, she has still yet to demonstrate any intellectual curiousity about anything. I mean, she could have simply answered that "Alaska is really, really far away from the rest of the country, and it is costly to get newspapers from other cities--not to mention that they wouldn't be timely. So I get my national and international news mostly from TV and internet news sites." Who knows, maybe she reads Pravda. I mean, the russians are really close and all.
Didn't want to create a new thread, so I'll stick it here. I read the McCain camp is upset with the way CBS is handling the intreviews with Palin and they have Palin taking a new tactic (or is it strategy). In her 4th interivew she is going to be much more assertive and come out fighting (the barracuda). There is a serious effort to regain that image she had at the convention (pit bull). I would expect this to come out in the debate. I don't know the style and saw someone comment that it is a chicken shit style, but I expect Palin to come out swinging taking shots as Obama and democratic policies. I always like the strategy (or is it tatic?) of being tough to begin with then showing a softer side . . . but if Palin can somehow regain her image as a tough outsider representing middle American values . . . does that put McCain back in it? I do think , if worst comes to worst, which is possible with Palin, she could lose this thing for McCain on Thursday.
Agree. She should try honesty. As governor of Alaska I am very busy scehdule and mostly keep up with all the current event in the state, which sometimes overlaps with national affairs. Being focused on local issues I get my news from a variety of sources, mainly I rely on staff, but also internet, newspapers and some times magazines. Staff will bring me news from X&Y newspaper blah blah blah. She should just explain her job, which I'm sure is very busy and full of current events. Stop bullshiting. The voters that supported her saw a hard working competent tough woman breaking another ceiling, but lately she is coming across like a airhead beauty queen. Can I say this stuff over the internet?
Re: Palin doesn't know any major court cases besides roe v wade. how embarrassing Why are you singling me out though? What do you want me to say? I'm glad to see another gaffe from her, I'm not exactly a fan. I hope the Palin pick completely blows up in McCain's face, he looks so phony now and I love how he's getting run out of RCP. Obama has a 4.8 Lead over there.
That would be Dred Scott v. Sandford. Just in case you're ever on Jeopardy or Cash Cab. How about... Plessy v. Ferguson (segregation) Marbury v. Madison (judicial review) Loving v. Virginia (interracial marriage) Lawrence v. Texas (decriminalizing homosexuality) Lochner v. New York (regulation vs liberty of contract) Adkins v. Children's Hospital (regulation vs liberty of contract) Muller v. Oregon (regulation vs liberty of contract) Schechter v. US aka Sick Chicken (overturned New Deal) Parrish v. West Coast Hotel (legalized New Deal) Regents of UC v. Bakke (affirmative action) Korematsu v. US (validated Japanese internment) Miranda v. Arizona (defendants' rights) Now, most people obviously won't know all those cases (unless they've suffered through oral exams). But most people surely have heard of something on that list. Or at least, most people who are freaking vice presidents of the United States have heard something on that list. Palin is just embarrassing. "Country First" my ass...
I find it humorous that people really pick at cracks that are as petty as her not naming a newspaper. Seriously who cares what newspaper she reads? Could it be that she reads teh USA today, Wall Street Journal Washington Post Whatever paper in Alaska, takes Time, Newsweek, National Geographic, etc...etc... I'm not saying that I have been all that impressed wit her, but I simply can't believe how petty people are being. Next thing yo know some journalist will be grilling her on quilted vs. non quilted 2 ply TP and people in here will act like she's a moron for her answer. This forum is becoming just like the last, Polarized to the point where people literally make judgement of an event before the event even happens. BTW there is a difference between Can't and Didn't. And Also please people at least try to listen tot he debate on Thursday. Listen to what is said, not your preconceived notion of what you deem as worthy or not.
Actually most of you think she's actually incapable. I haven't decided who to vote for yet, Maybe Mccain, maybe Obama. So for me it's still important to pay attention to what's important. Very little of which has come up in these "interviews"
Well, I wouldn't go that far. Clearly she can read (from a teleprompter, for example). True. But that itself is something important. Why has nothing important come up in these "interviews"? One answer is that she's done very few interviews. Another answer is that the campaign intentionally picked interviewers who would not ask about anything important. A third answer is that she avoided answering questions on important topics. A fourth answer is that her answers are such gibberish that nothing can be learned from them. I don't see any reason to expect anything different in the debate. It is essentially the same format as the interviews, except that Biden will be in the room. barfo
FWIW, I don't remember the last time I read a newspaper. Maybe at the airport when I was bored or something. I read news on dozens of WWW sites daily. The stories tend to be whatever Yahoo! News or Google News puts in front of me (as links to click on), or Drudge's links. I've read numerous NYT WWW site articles, but I've never gone there to just start reading whatever news they have (like on their home page). The vast majority of the news I seem to read is in 95% of the newspapers as AP written and distributed news articles. Magazine? Maybe at the doctor's office or at the dentist's.
There certainly are other ways of getting news than newspapers, and if Palin had said exactly what you said above, well, it would have been so out of character we'd all be astonished, frankly. Perhaps Katie should have asked her what she reads, period. Perhaps limiting it to newspapers was too restrictive. Perhaps Sarah couldn't make the leap from newspapers to whatever it is she does read. barfo
She said she reads "whatever is put before me." I've read articles on the Guardian's WWW site (UK newspaper) frequently. I'm not sure if I read one yesterday or not, or the day before. I'm sure that people in her administration send her links to articles all the time by e-mail, or clip them from newspapers. Since her email's been hacked, we know she's certainly exposed to news links on yahoo's or gmail's first page, and that she uses the Internet.
And what is put before her? I'm not. She's staffed her administration with people she went to high school with. Not clear to me that any of them read newspapers. She's ahead of McCain, at least. But using yahoo mail does not mean she's reading news links. barfo
She's no Einstein, but she's no drooling moron either. Somewhere in between. It'd be pretty hard for her to read and compose e-mail or run a govt. with a budget many times the size of Obama's entire campaign if she were as illiterate as you're making her out to be. I also think it's brilliant for the Democrats to talk down to people in the flyover states and think of them as idiots.
And it goes both ways. I've seen the McCain campaign try their damndest to slander Obama with any kind of garbage they can.
I've already stipulated that she can read. I will also stipulate that she can write emails. I agree that that is bad practice. The idiots in flyover states are just sentient enough to take umbrage at that. Until we can revoke their voting privileges it is best to humor them. barfo
I don't think the voters who mock her answer about what she reads are really interested in what she reads, it is her ability to think on her feet. She has shown very little of that during the interviews, the upcoming debate is a time for her to redeem herself . . . which she has to do. Also, this isn't local politics. You can't say little one liners like you have foreign policy experience because Russia is your next door neighbor and get away it. maybe you get away with it during a speech with a clever delivery, tilt of the headand a smile, but the media is going to "hold you accountable" to your statement. "I said no thank you to the bridge" yells and cheers like she is hero of cutting gov't spending . . . give me a break.
I don't think the voters who mock her answer care if she's smart or not. If they can't find something like that to nitpick, it'd be accusing her teenage daughter of having a child.
