...lately. Things seem to run slow and/or freeze at times. The simplest things like opening a folder take forever. I'm checking for viruses right now, so I'll update later. I'm at the point where I just feeling doing system restore, but I have too many err....movies....and music files.

    Used space - 207GB
    Free space - 20.8GB

Mine is only about 2 years old, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The more full your hard drive, the slower your computer will be.

You might look at an external storage drive (firewire/usb) and move as much as you can off your boot drive.

You can also hit ctrl-alt-del and look at the processes running to see if there's anything suspicious. You can google for whatever.exe and find www pages that'll tell you if it's a virus or spyware or a useful thing.

    There's also http://ubuntu.com (I'd recommend the kubuntu.com version).

If your CPU is 64 bits capable, download the 64 bit version - works great.

    Won't play directx games tho.

I see. Well, I'll do a little bit of cleanup and if that doesn't work, I must just restore the whole thing.

If you're going to reinstall, you may as well download the CD image for ubuntu and try it out.

You can boot off the CD and try it out without wiping out your hard disk. Installation is VERY easy.

    I'm downloading it right now.

I just realized I can't reinstall right now. I have some important essays, documents, etc for school, so I might have to get myself a USB, first.

It seems my computer has some kind of virus. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of it.

I haven't read the rest of the posts, but this is what I would do:

    1. Thoroughly scan my machine.
    2. Defrag my hard drive.
    3. Reformat my machine.

The reformat shouldn't take too long. I'd back-up your large files.

I'm pretty sure I got rid of the virus.

And I deleted a bunch of movies that I really don't need to have around. Now my PC seems to run smoother. I'll continue the process later.
