I agree, Hopefully his body responds well to the treatment and he's able to come back strong. I think it's about time we found a Walton Jersey, take it to mid court and burn it ... maybe a sacrificial goat ... any other suggestions are welcome.
I wonder, do the blazers just pay for the surgery with cash or do they have to go through insurance BS and crap?
There's a reason Walton never returned to his form from 1977, stress fractures in your feet have the potential to nag for years ... we can only hope for the best in Martell's case.
Got to look at the positives. We should have seen enough last year, this year's TC and the one Preseason Game, to accurately gauge his contract value. And, seeing that he's out for 2 months or more, he's probably lost the opportunity to justify a less-than-deserving contract length and amount. Portland will be justified to slowly bring him back and most likely off the bench. I feel real sad for Martell. There are quite a few negatives in all this, but I'm just not wanting to ruin the honeymoon right now.
Normally, I just read things like this and never comment on it (injuries and all that) but this time I feel as if I can shed some light on the severity of Martells injury. While I obviously did not see Martells x-rays, MRI or CT scan based off of the type of surgery that was performed (single screw into the 5th metatarsal) I can say with almost 100% certainty what type of fracture Martell has and what the course of his treatment will be. So, in case your wondering what makes me qualified and all, I am a podiatrist in the bay area. What they are calling a stress fracture is most likely a Jones fracture. Jones fractures are one of the more serious fractures of the foot because they occur at the metaphyseal diaphyseal junction in bone. This is a poor area of vascularity which is why i believe that they opted for surgical correction. Secondly, since the fracture occurs close to the base of the metatarsal typical surgical approach is with a single cannulated screw through the base and into the shaft. Most patients are kept non-weightbearing (depending on the severity of the fracture) on the foot for 6-8 weeks and are transtioned into normal shoe gear as tolerated. Full recovery can take upwards of 3 months and given that he is a professional athlete I would say that there will be a 2nd surgery to remove the screw because it is a rather large screw that takes up 50% of the width of bone and is painful to run on (not to mention a major tendon (the peroneus brevis) inserts into the base of the 5th metatarsal). I'd also expect him to be a bone stimulator which helps promote bone growth given the hypovascular area of bone. So if you are still reading this and wondering why I am telling you this I think some people are curious as to when Martell will be back in uniform. Given that the team will not divulge the seriousness of the injury I think as a fan of the team and as a service to all of you I can shed some light where I have knowledge and help others understand the seriousness of the injury. My private patients (who are not athletes) I walk them around 6-8 weeks and then get them into a removable cast for another month. After that they are free to gradual increase there workout regimen. Now Martell is an athlete and more likely to heal faster then most but if this truely is a Jones fracture and given the type of surgery described with a single screw placed into the bone he will at the very least be out a couple of months. Hope this helps anyone who is interested.
Was it just me or did I hear somewhere that he sustained the injury during the Kings preseason game and played through it?
Funny you should mention Walton. Because Martell broke the same bone that Walton broke when he was a Blazer....and then took numbing shots and played on it.
