The year is 1994. The UFC is visiting the Expo Square Pavillion in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Almost six thousand fans cram the arena to see the likes of Royce Gracie and Dan Severn compete in the fourth UFC tournament. One of the competitors is Joe Son, a Korean-born preacher from MMA hotbed Huntington Beach, California. Que the voiceover actor: "Joe Son, known to some as Kimo's [Leopoldo] manager, returns to the Octagon tonight as a fighter. At 23-years of age, he is a student of Taekwondo and Judo, and the founder of his own system of martial arts: Joe Son Do." Joe Son is introduced as a third-degree black belt in Taekwondo who began martial arts instruction under his father at five years old. His (large) entourage enters the stage--preceeded by two men holding up Bible verses. You can tell something strange is about to happen. At UFC 3 (The American Dream), Kimo, Joe Son's (older) protege, entered the arena carrying a huge wooden cross on his back, emulating his savior. Similarly, Joe Son, entering the arena at UFC 4, bears the same cross. The difference is that Joe Son is 5'4", eleven inches shorter than Kimo and significantly less muscular. Within the first few steps of dragging the cross into the arena, Joe Son looks visibly fatigued. He is hunched over, carrying the weight of the massive cross on the middle of his back in an awkward and painful position, to the point where his chest is parallel to the floor. His flock of followers surround him cheering but nobody offers a hand. By the time he reaches the Octagon, Joe Son is weary. His opponent is UFC veteran Keith Hackney, a White Tiger Kempo Karate specialist with a background in Taekwondo. Hackney had defeated human whale Emmanuel Yarborough at UFC 3 in spectacular fashion, hammering the Sumo with chops and kicks and earning a TKO within two minutes. The fight beings typically enough. Joe Son rushes in to close the distance then starts posing with his hands down at his waist, waiting for Hackney to attack. Hackney kicks his leg and spins Joe Son around, but the Korean maintains his static stance. Hackney then attacks again, getting Joe Son to the ground, but Joe Son takes top position and tries to work a front headlock. Hackney gets back to his feet and punches Joe Son in the groin ineffectively. Hackney pushes Joe Son to the fence and the two tumble, Hackney landing in side mount with the headlock still applied. Hackney continues to attack the groin with punches, squirming out of the headlock. With his left hand free, Hackney pushes on Joe Son's neck below the chin while pulling on Joe Son's trunks with his right hand. Joe Son, exhausted, taps-out. Fight over. Hackney advanced to the semi-finals losing to Royce Gracie by armbar. Joe Son would go on to compete three more times in MMA in the early 21st century, twice with PRIDE and Xtreme Pankration, losing in the first round in all three fights. The legend of Joe Son lives on, though. The man is now supposedly homeless in Los Angeles, where he has accosted people with randomness. One fan on the internet claimed Joe Son tried to sell him shoelaces and wouldn't leave him alone, and others have cited similar run-ins with the former UFC fighter. Joe Son is S2's first MMA Moment.
Re: MMA Moment 01: The Legend of Joe Son Haha, what a character. Also it would of been funny to see this guy getting repeatedly hit in the groin
Re: MMA Moment 01: The Legend of Joe Son ^ I tried to find a gif but I can't see one. Just envision from that picture Keith Hackney's fist punching him in the groin over and over.
Re: MMA Moment 01: The Legend of Joe Son According to TMZ, Joe Son has been arrested on a gang rape charge from 1990.
