Some of these posts are just asinine. We've seen this work before. Glenn, Owens, Witten, Crayton. There were plenty of balls to go around then. No one complained. And Glenn managed to get 1000 yards as well. Roy can too. The one who is going to suffer is Crayton. And who cares? Honestly. He could be easily traded.
How doesn't this improve us? Williams or Crayton? If Owens gets hurt, this offense is in a jam. Hell, this offense has struggled a little lately because Owens HASN'T been able to get separation like he did last year. Perhaps its a sign of slowing down. Perhaps its a sign that he's just getting double covered more. Either way, Williams draws coverage AWAY from Owens MUCH more than Crayton. And you missed it a couple of weeks ago... when Owens was saying he wanted the offense to get Felix involved in the offense more. Or he was THRILLED (actually, Proud was the word used) that Austin was stepping up and establishing himself.
i'm sure the cowboys would have loved to make a move to improve the defense. but that may not have been a possibility. improving the offense still helps the team though. it's easy to look good in very limited time. i expect that felix would perform better given more carries obviously, but with barber and the other talent on the team i would be looking to get him close to 10 carries per game. i doubt that. no i think williams will take a lot of catches from crayton and austin and will likely take a few catches from witten/barber by being a better receiver that crayton/austin. when i say a few more, i mean it. getting him 3-5 more carries per game would be my goal. i said that barber and witten will probably lose a couple of catches per game due to roy williams being better than crayton/austin and the qb not having to check the ball down to barber or moving down to a lower option on the play and throwing it to witten. if those are the catches they lose, that doesn't hurt the offense at all. if barber/witten lose catches because the ball is being thrown downfield because williams did a better job of getting open or because williams being there has allowed owens to work against less defenders and make it easier for him to get open, how exactly does that hurt the team? maybe slightly less. but not to any degree that i would worry about.
“I called Terrell and he was ecstatic,” Jones revealed. “He was the first person I called after I talked to Roy. As soon as Terrell heard he said, ‘Give me Roy’s number, I have to call him,’ .” Clearly, Owens is lying.
We have 9 draft picks next year. Plus 2 comp picks for Reeves and Julius Jones. We don't have roster spots for 11 rookies. I expect more trades come draft time.
Probably. Newman, Jenkins, Scandrick, Ball...... Henry is up in the air. Looks like a mid round pick or a mid type FA of someone like Rudy Gay caliber.
If Felix Jones doesn't get more involved, the Cowboys won't go anywhere. In order for him to get involved, someone is going to have to take a production hit. I doubt the Cowboys will stop throwing to Witten or exclude Marion Barber from the offense.
It doesn't improve you because it doesn't solve any problems. Jerry Jones went and got a guy (and overpaid for him) he did not need, and added him to an offense that was already top flight and had plenty of weapons. So you still have an elite offense. Congratulations. Unfortunately, that's not the issue. Pass defense is where you need help (especially with Pacman likely out the door), Dallas is 17th in pass yard per game given up, and 20th in points allowed. An already-unhappy wide receiver serving as a decoy for someone even more selfish than he is? I'll pay to see that. Jones doesn't interfere with Owens' role in the offense as much as Williams will.
So Jerry Jones may not have had a move available to improve the defense. Does that mean he has to piss away a 1st and 3rd round pick in order to add a talented yet unneeded piece to an already great offense? That makes no sense. If we were dealing with reasonable people, I'd doubt it too. But we're not. These guys have huge egos and get pissy when they're not involved as much as they want. How does he steal Witten or Barber's catches by being better than Crayton or Austin? First, Romo checking the ball down to Barber was effective. It may have been a last resort at times, but it worked well for the most part. I don't think its realistic to expect Williams to be the key to Owen's freedom. I mean, Crayton was a pretty good receiver, no? Its not like Sam Hurd was lining up at the other receiver spot. And Williams isn't THAT great a receiver anyways. The only two decent years he's had have been in the Martz offense, which goes out of its way to get the ball to the wide receivers on every play. The scenario where it could hurt the offense is if things, as I predict, get congested, and bickering breaks out. You may not deem that a possibility, but there are some pretty volatile personalities on that team now. And chemistry matters in the NFL.
Crayton doesn't get separation against #2 CBs all that well. So teams can line up a legit #2 CB, take away Crayton.... then double Owens with a CB and a S. That's been the problem. Williams changes that. It upgrades the offense. A lot. Crayton is a good role player. Roy can dictate things to a level Crayton never could, never will.
if roy williams does a better job beating his coverage than crayton and austin, then on plays where roy williams is the top receiving option(or one of the first options) it is less likely that romo would eventually have to check down to barber or move on to his next option which in many cases would be witten. so there would be a couple fewer balls going to witten and barber just because williams did a better job and the ball was able to go to one of the first options on the play instead of romo haven't to go through to a later option. right. it's been effective and will continue to be effective. but a downfield pass to williams is likely to gain more yards than a check down to barber so if adding williams means that romo ends up checking the ball down to barber a little less each game, it still helps the offense because the ball is going downfield and picking up more yards. no, crayton isn't a pretty good receiver. he's decent, but he's nothing special. roy williams is something special. his physical ability is ridiculous and he's a good receiver too. and yeah, he won't be playing in a mike martz offense but he'll have the best qb he's ever had once romo comes back and this will be the first time he's ever played on a team with decent running game to help open things up for the receivers.
Uh, yes, it does. Especially if the defense falters. We'll need to score points. Roy will add to that. Secondly... the problems on defense are two fold: pass rush and coverage issues. No team is going to trade a pass rusher; no team is going to trade a CB. So... that solves that. Plus, we need a #1 type WR in the near future. Roy solves that, too. Its about NOW AND THE FUTURE.
That may be the case, but we haven't resolved the issue of congestion and bickering. If Roy is getting all these passes, how is it going to appease Owens. Its more than winning with him. That's essentially the core point of my whole debate. On paper, it looks really good. In the locker room and on the field, there are way too many potential problems with it, concerning chemistry, which does matter. T.O. has shown in the past he's all too happy to oblierate somebody's season when he doesn't get his way. On top of throwing away a 1st rounder. In 2007 Roy only had a decent year, IMO. 60 catches roughly, didn't reach 1000 yards. In 2006 he was the only receiver in the show.
it's never a bad thing to upgrade the offense. maybe it doesn't "need" to be upgraded, but it sure as hell helps to be even better on offense. the more points you can score, the more points you can give up and still win the game.
You ARE scoring points. So because no pass rushers or corners were out there, Jones decided to splurge on a player he didn't need? You guys are acting like Williams is some sort of savior. The point remains, this offense didn't need fixing.
