Ben Wallace is one of the better big man defenders, a very good rebounder to and has accomplished much more than Bynum has. He's a solid pick up this late, but there are other options out there.
Ben Wallace may have been the 2nd best defensive player of all-time. Regardless of his lack of offense, his defense was worth a lot of points in the form of stops. If there's any real knock on him, it's that his prime was short and his decline rapid.
slow down Denny, Wallace is still behind Russell, Wilt, Hakeem, Rodman and McHale as defensive bigs at the very least. there's a guy I'm looking at who was equally as good defensively too
I've seen them all play, and Wallace truly was #2. People talk about how Detroit had no superstars yet won a championship, yet they did have superstars and Wallace was the main one. I'd argue that Sheed was a superstar and Billups, too.
If not for his lack of offense I was going to choose Big Ben over Brand.....He's also better than Bynum. In his prime I'm taking Big Ben's amazing defense every day of the week.................
I'd put Russell, Hakeem, and Wilt over him.................to be honest Ben was a better defender than Rodman or McHale......
Why not pick Ben Wallace if you need some muscle in your frontline? Who cares what he can't do? I'm sure every team can use him to help protect a lead. A lot of these offense-only teams desperately need a guy like him. He was also the best player on a World Champion. There are probably no more of those available.
Right now, I'll take Bynum, but this is an all-time draft and if both stopped playing today, Bynum would be forgotten and Wallace wouldn't. Ben Wallace has the following: Andrew Bynum has a third of a season of good play.
agreed, if this was a keeper league, I'd take bynum, but this is an all-era draft. taking the best players to have ever played. Bynum in not in the top 3,000 based on his career right now. If he turns out to be as good as many ppl think then yeah he should eventually be in an all era draft.
Rodman could guard wings. They are completely different types of defenders. I think it's harder to find a guy like Rodman. Bigs that can bang and control the area around the rim are just as valuable, but there are a lot more of them. Ben was one of the best, though.
Ahh, that is where we differed in thinking lol Not that I would've taken Bynum in a draft like this, I actually don't want any modern players....if I wanted that I could've done a GM Draft, and I basically ran two of them. I was estimating how Bynum would be like at the end of his career, nothing extravagant, but in the end of his career more effective than Wallace was OVERALL. My mistake.
Your argument might be that he's a good 12th man in that he could potentially be one of the greats. If he had to match up against other teams' 12th man, he is probably the loser on that comparison.
Agreed. And I think what DW was expressing is one of the reasons why voting will be interesting and somewhat scary for me. What are people voting on? I know its up to the individual. I'm going with the players at their established best. Others have said they're going with projections, what older players would be in today's NBA, and we just had Derrick Coleman drafted on what might have been.
yeah he might have been great, but he was still a very good player even if his attitude sucked at times. there wasn't a big man left that I'd take over him.
