Since we're talking about tournaments, when I was in 8th grade (age 13), I placed 26th (tied for 4th) in the Junior High School National Chess Championship.

Ah Chess, my high school's best sport.

We have Francis Chen, best player in CA, and 2nd in the nation!

Your sister is hot. And if I was falling off a boat, I could totally grab onto her knockers to drag myself up.

Kobe need to take a paycut in order to keep this championship team going. Otherwise if we offer this money to him we are doomed.

He is taking a paycut albeit a small one. His new deal would allow him to remain with the Lakers until he's 36.

Again the Lakers have built in advantages over smaller market teams like the Spurs, where their owner isn't willing to go over the luxury tax threshold.

The Lakers just need to avoid mistakes or rectify previous mistakes like the signing of Luke and develop their bench through the draft and/or veterans looking for a ring on the cheap.

I would give the money he has earned it. But we sure don't want to loose him to you know. Kobe is going to get a good deal and it better be with the Lakers.

Don't think he's worth that much. Yep, sorry to be the first to say it.

What do you feel he's worth? Who would you realistically spend the money on if not Kobe?

It's very easy to be convinced, I think, given Kobe's play the last few years and his season last year, that he is worth $25M/year. But try as he might, Kobe is an old 30. He is a noticeably old 30. He is still able to dazzle you with the occasional spectacular play, but right now, he isn't even in the top 20 in the NBA as far as athleticism goes. Not even close. And he's 30. How good could he possibly be at 35 and 36?

That said, for the next couple of years, you can justifiably pay Kobe $25M/year and come out ahead. He puts people in the seats, he'll get you 25/5/5, and the Lakers may even win a championship. But you would be kidding yourself if you think Kobe can give you enough in the tail end of that contract to be worth the sticker price. Giving that kind of money to an aging star almost never works, across all sports excepts perhaps bowling, in which case senility is a virtue.

What do I think he's worth? Maybe $70M over three years. I will always admire him, but I would not want him on my favorite team past 33 or 34.

Who would I spend the money on? There aren't many notable free agents next year, so it's hard to say. If Kobe leaves in '09, we can't replace him until 2010 at the earliest, in which case I wouldn't be opposed to baiting Lebron. I would also be very happy with the acquisition of an elite point guard to pair up with Bynum.

Our core aside from Bynum will be outside their prime by 2010; and that's only if we're lucky enough to pick up someone significant by that date. We don't even know what to expect from Andrew over the course of a season (love the kid but he's not even extended yet). Kobe's probably the best shot we'll have at a title over the next decade, I'm willing to overpay for him. Plus he's going to make the Lakers a ridiculous amount of money through various fashions due to his epic status in this league.

    Probably...

But that doesn't really matter. The Celtics core were all outside of their "prime" last year, and still won the championship

(not saying you didn't know this huevon, just pointing it out :])
