From: HoopsWorld (BTW, Frye somewhat compares his role/game to Robert Horry's. He'll need to become that consistent long-range shooter, but I thought that was a fairly apt description.)
If anything, Frye should be a significant upgrade over Diogu to get those backup PF minutes. And hopefully we can sign the guy to a long-term contract at a reasonable price as I think he's a perfect fit here.
Frye doesn't need hunger. He needs to get tougher. As for the Horry comparison: I don't see it, unless we're only talking about the Horry late in his career. When Horry entered from Alabama (where he was on a pretty damn good team with McKey and Hollywood Robinson) he was a tall guy who could handle the ball. He later evolved in a defensive presence and then settled in as a set-up shooter. I think that Frye has just got straight to the final stage, which is similar to Matt Bullard. This might come off as harsh towards Frye, but I'm in that kind of mood this morning. Heh. Hopefully he is healthy and can step into the rotation and give us the offense we know he can AND not be a liability on the other end. Ed O.
I remember back when.........when many of us Blazer fans compared, tit-for-tat, the ongoing successes/failures between Horry and Uncle Cliffy.
I am actually hoping Frye doesn't have a breakout year . . . I don't know if the Blazers could afford to match offers out there. Fyre likes Portland, seems content to back up Aldridge and maybe get some minutes here and there at center or the SF. Eventually this team is going to need players who contribute some on the court but more are good locker room and practice guys. I see Frye fitting that bill ( I agree with Ed that it would be better if he played more physical) . . . but some team may see him as a starter at the PF postion and lure him over.
