i would have taken it, big men get injured all the time and thats a pretty fair deal. I doubt he can get the max unless he does 20/10
$5M per is about right for Maxiell. I can see why he wouldn't sign it because players and agents always over value their actual worth. He might get more money some where else, but he won't have the same opportunities of winning like he has here in Detroit.
It's understandable that he won't likely be signing a long term deal. He thinks he's worth more than what he is and just wants to test the waters. However, when it comes down to it, I think he'll end up signing back on with the Pistons come the offseason.
I doubt he gets too overpaid because of this. I think he should be looking at something in the lines of a Udonis Haslem-esque contract, which if I'm correct, isn't too much more than the MLE.
Agree that's a fair deal for him. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with a player opting to wait for a payday because theoretically the worst case is that they get a similar deal on the open market. Maxiell is in a strange situation in Detroit though. Hes clearly good enough to be in the rotation but with Amir Johnson starting alongside Rasheed, that makes McDyess a 6th man type so Maxiell is probably going to be the 4th big in the rotation plus hes got Kwame Brown right behind him who could take minutes away if the coach wants size to match up with some of the bigger frontlines. Plus you never know if you could get injured and it would ruin your upcoming free agency session.
