So, we're a little over halfway through the season, and I was wondering who everyone was looking at as the Heisman frontrunners. Right now, I'd go with either Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy. Both are having fantastic seasons and are on arguably two of the best teams in the nation. A darkhorse I'd like to throw out there would be Shonn Green out of Iowa. I realize the Hawks have 3 losses, but he has been a model of consistency. Coming in to today, he had 152 carries for 937 yards and 6 TDs and was 3rd in the nation in rushing yards. If you include today (which his game is still in progress), he now has 177 carries for 1155 yards and 10 TDs (he's got 25 carries for 218 yards and 4 TDs today). He's also the only player in the Bowl Subdivision to start off his season with 8 straight 100+ yard rushing games. Call me crazy, biased, or whatever, but I'd say those numbers certainly deserve somewhat of a mention.
i hate how oklahoma and texas get all the attention, green is a beast and deseves ALOT of consideration.
I hear ya dude. I'm a die-hard Hawkeye fan and it bums me out that his amazing season is going relatively unnoticed. If you had a chance to watch the game today, he looked amazing. 25 carries for 218yds and 4tds, absolutely amazing. Also, this was at least the third game this year that I've watched where the announcers of the game called Shonn Green an NFL RB playing in the NCAA.
Don't get me wrong, I like Ringer...but his stats are inflated by his touches. He's got 84 more carries than Green but only 25 more yards. Sure, he's got more TDs...but that's partially because of the more touches he's gotten. Green has been a model of consistency this season with his eight straight 100+ yard games, never averaging less than 5ypc in any of them. Ringer, on the other hand, had a rough game against Cal (3ypc), Iowa (3.6ypc), Northwestern (3.4ypc) and OSU (only 64yds). Regardless of any of this though, Greene has certainly proven that he's one of the elite backs in the Big 10 and maybe even the nation. I have a hunch he's going to be playing on Sundays here in the near(ish) future. I'd just prefer it not be 'til 2010...that way we can take advantage of his last year of eligibility next year.
Real mature. And I don't doubt that Ringer will be playing on Sundays, but if you watch Shonn Greene, it's hard to doubt that he will as well. He's a big, strong back that also has very good lateral quickness and speed. You clearly have not watched Iowa at all if you don't think he has the talent to be playing on Sundays.
No, I've watched Iowa, and Greene is good. But to start a mid-season heismen trophy thread and not include Ringer is flat out dumb.
Colt McCoy without a doubt is the leader right now. He's averaging a TD every 10 touches (something like that). Insane. One darkhorse I'd like to mention is Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State.
I don't see how it's stupid. His stats are not that impressive. I love the yardage and TDs...but they're highly inflated by how much he's carried the ball. Just look at his carries and compare him to Greene. He's got 263 carries this year, that's 86 more than Shonn Greene has. Despite having that many more carries, he only has 24 more yards and 4 more TDs. His YPC average is only 4.5 while Greene is sitting at 6.5. So, in theory, based on his production, if Greene had as many carries as Ringer, based on averages, he'd have about 1709 yards and 14 TDs, which are far greater numbers than Ringer has put up. Now I realize these numbers are hypothetical, I was just putting them out there for comparison purposes. Basically, Greene is doing what Ringer is doing and he's doing it in A LOT fewer carries. For that matter, he's also doing it while seeing a couple other guys get carries. To disregard what he's doing is ridiculous, especially when he's having a far greater season than the guy you're touting as a Heisman candidate.
I would definitely agree that McCoy has to be the frontrunner. He's putting up ridiculous stats this year. I mean seriously, 81% completion percentage? That's just ridiculous. And the scary thing is that he's only going to get better now that Texas has some semblance of a running game.
You also have to remember that MSU is in the beginning of a rebuilding process. MSU's entire offense is built around Ringer's running game. Bryan Hoyer is absolute trash, the offensive line is trash, the defense is trash, and MSU is still having a good year. I don't care how many carries hes getting, if MSU beats scUM, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Penn State, why shouldn't he win it? I know thats a bit of a stretch, but UM, Wisconsin, and Purdue are all very do-able. D'antoni has this team goin in the right direction.
Because Iowa isn't in a rebuilding process? Do you not recall our QB carousel to begin the year? Hell, it could begin again at any given point if Stanzi messes up. Iowa has been down for the last couple years and they're just starting to turn the corner again, so just because MSU is "rebuilding" doesn't mean shit, it's just an excuse. Oh yea, you should probably care about how many carries he's getting. For one, that's why he has the stats he does. Reduce his carries to about where Shonn's are and he probably isn't even at 1000 yards. Also, if you're an MSU fan, you should probably be worried about it, because eventually he's going to break down from having to carry such a huge work load. And I have two reasons why he shouldn't win the Heisman. The first one is Colt. The second is McCoy. Colt McCoy is having one of the best seasons we've ever seen from a QB. He's got an 81% completion percentage for the SEASON. Most QBs don't do that for a game, he's done it ALL YEAR. He's also got 19 TD passes to only 3 INTs, a 190.76 rating (which is beyond ridiculous), and he's also got nearly 500 yards rushing with another 4 TDs there. He is having a ridiculous season, and if he keeps it up, there's no way he doesn't win the Heisman. For that matter, he SHOULD win it in a landslide.
Arkelon Hall until he got injured. ^jk Right now it's McCoy. It's hard for me to admit it because I hate Texas, but it's true. His stats are simply amazing and he is the leader of the #1 team in the country.
