I used to be intimidated by construction until I realized there's a reason why they don't offer Ph.D's in residential construction techniques. A really good way to improve your DIY skills is to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. You get to learn how to frame a house, put up drywall, etc. while also helping others. HoH is a great organization.
