I've been listening to some of their songs recently. Just wondering if anyone here listens to them, and if so, what are your thoughts? I think they're pretty good for the most part. Most of their songs are pretty relaxing to listen to.

I do actually, I just don't have nearly the amount of knowledge Main Event has on this subject. He always recommends a bunch of their tracks to me.

Here is a vid he made using some of their songs:

*There's also a Sublime song at the end. You'll like them too.

I haven't listened to any of their newer stuff, but I really liked their old stuff (Grassroots, Music, 311 albums). I think the last one I listened to was Transistor.

Does anyone know how they came up with their name? I heard a crazy rumor about it, but I want to see what you guys heard before I post it.

Someone recommended them to me, I just got their greatest hits album a couple of days ago, and kinda going from there. I like what I've listened to so far.

"The group got their real name when former member, Jim Watson, the band's former guitarist, was charged with indecent exposure in a skinny-dipping incident by the Omaha Police Department and was escorted home handcuffed and naked. The police code which appeared on the citation was "3.11" and the band soon chose it for their name."

311 is a pretty good band. I really like the cover they did of love song.

    I mean, I love 'em! :)

I consider them to have one of the best bassists (P-Nuts) around, some of his rhythms are insane. I was introduced to 311 a few years ago. At that time, I was really into the reggae scene (Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Toots & the Maytals, Steel Pulse, etc), and Sublime. I hated 311. I didn't like their rough guitar riffs, or the heavy beats. But for some reason, they grew on me - A lot. The first song I remember liking was "Applied Science". Then, I started finding songs by myself. A few songs you have to check out (don't worry about that rollerblading shit:

    Omaha Stylee

I love how Nick Hexum (the guy who sort of raps) starts out, and then SA comes in with his higher voice. It makes the song.

    Applied Science

Another great song, in my opinion.

    Cali Soca

This just goes to show how innovative they are. Not many bands make instrumentals nowadays. Also, it's totally against their style. Still a great song though.

    Creatures (For Awhile)

Not many present bands have the luxury of having two great vocalists. Usually you have the main guy and the back-up (Serj and Shavo from System of a Down), but these guys both compliment each other so well they are equal.

    Champagne

If you like slower shit, this is for you.

    -------------

I'm going to stop myself here, or otherwise I'll go on forever.

I like them. I'm a huge Sublime fan and I find them to be maybe the closest thing to Sublime that I know of (yes, that includes Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, LB Dub All-Stars, etc.). They still don't hold a candle to Sublime but no one does. Pretty good band though, I should probably listen to them more but I can't DL music anymore in college so it'll have to wait.

BTW I know VC likes them a lot too. I'm sure he could talk to you about them for hours if you can ever get a hold of him.

Side note but I've been HUGE into Incubus lately. Shit is awesome.

    I've actually listened to Sublime...

I have no idea why, but I cannot get into them. Love 311 though.

Btw, can you guys explain to me what's the difference between alternative and rock? I think I get the general concept, alternative is more mellow right? I guess I'm a more alternative guy.

I'm also finding I don't really miss rap music that much, I only listen to it here and there now.

    RHCP is my shit

Sublime is my shit. I'd recommend beginning with them by listening to their self-titled album which is way more mainstream and appealing to the masses. If you like that then you'll probably appreciate their older, funkier stuff. Robbin the Hood is my favorite album of theirs but I rarely meet Sublime fans who agree. Most casual listeners say self titled and most hardcore people say 40 Ounces to Freedom.

The term 'rock' is insanely broad. Alternative is a little more specific but it has become very broad over time. Whenever I hear alternative I think of anything from the 90s through the present. AFAIK it was a term used to classify the post 80s style of rock that grunge ushered in. Its changed a lot and the term alternative covers a ton of different styles of music now. I'd say most mainstream rock post Guns N' Roses is probably alternative unless its clearly defined as something else like metal or something.

And yes RHCP is the shit. I'm into a lot of these types of bands; Sublime, RHCP, Incubus, 311, etc.

Sublime is by far my favorite band. Their genre is unique and combines reggae bass, with Cali beats, and their own Dub Stylee twist and sometimes they have a bit of punk (which I'm not a fan of). Bradley is a great vocalist, and has great rhythm. Eric is one of my favorite bassists around, and I've been learning a few things off of him (no one-to-one of course!).

If you want to get into Sublime, I recommend these songs:

    40oz to Freedom
    Date Rape
    Smoke Two Joints
    April 29, 1992
    Santeria
    What I Got

That should be a good start. If you like them, check out:

    Lets Go Get Stoned
    Don't Push
    Boss DJ
    Ball and Chain
    Garden Grove

    Scarlett Begonias

Another great band is Slightly Stoopid, which Run just mentioned. Check out Above the Clouds, Officer, and This Joint for starters.

Pepper is an alright band, but I never really got into them. I did love their song called The Arena but I can't find a good quality version anywhere. LBDAS are alright too, I just hate their lead singer.

If you want some real grass roots shit, check out Steel Pulse, The Toots & the Maytals, Dubconscious, and Peter Tosh. I'm also really into The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Biggie, Dre, UB40, Jack Johnson, and Kottonmouth Kings.

I love 311, I have been listing to them since I was in High School way back when.

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but a song you should check out is the acappella cover they did of What I Got. It's fucking awesome!

I love 311 and Sublime. The two bands I listen to the most. I like Dave Matthews a lot too.
