Four Week Lay-Off For Lahm

Bayern Munich will be without the services of full back Philipp Lahm for around four weeks as he looks to recover from a fractured foot bone.

The announcement came from the Bavarian club following an examination of the full back’s foot by club doctor Dr Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt on Wednesday.

Lahm’s foot has been placed in plaster as a precaution, but it is feared he suffered a partial fracture of the tarsal bone during Tuesday night’s Champions League victory over Fiorentina.

“We hope it’s not too drawn-out, but we’re counting on being without him for the next two or three matches” reported coach Jürgen Klinsmann.

Lahm himself is remaining upbeat about the injury and is not getting too down-heartened over his enforced lay-off. “I’m assuming I’ll be playing again before the winter break, although we haven’t had the final diagnosis yet” he admitted.

“It’s a shame when you’re forced to take a break, but it’s not come as a shock. I’ve had much worse”. The German international full back has previously suffered a stress fracture of the foot, a torn cruciate ligament and elbow ligament damage.

The loss of Lahm is obviously a blow to Bayern, but Jürgen Klinsmann has plenty of cover with Christian Lell the most likely candidate to be asked to fill in. It was Lell who replaced Lahm on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena.

“He did a good job” Klinsmann said of Lell. “We know he can fill the position. We’ll have a think about it over the next few days although we’re aware we have no like-for-like replacement for Philipp in his position.”

The other option would be for Bayern to revert to a back three, as has already been tried this season.
