The premise for this is simple. For every player, lets keep track of what we consider good games and bad games. I think they should be pretty clear-cut good and bad. If they're just forgetable then so what. So you get a +1 for a good game, a -1 for a bad game, and a 0 for a non-difference making game. Any disagreement so far? I'm not sure I'd agree with some of those assessments. I tivo'd the Celtics game, and they really didn't play that badly. For all his bricks, Tyrus only forced one shot. He was taking shots in the context of the offense. The only guy who really had a bad game was Noc, and he is being asked to play small forward and guard Pierce, which really isn't something he can do. BG only had a few really bad plays, a couple of forced shots. I don't think Hinrich played badly at all. Nights like that are going to happen with a young team learning a new system. If Tyrus shoots 40 percent, makes 5 more of those shots, it's about a 5 point game most of the way. They were just pressing. I'd call it a bad game if they were forcing more individual play, but they really weren't for the most part. If it were the end of the season and a playoff spot was on the line, that would be a different story, but I'd say most of those guys played one or two good games and one meh game.
the team shot 29.8%. a team shoots that bad = bad game. you have too many "ifs" and "what if" and that's not how it goes.
BS: 2 for 17 gets you a bad game mark in my book! It's only one game, but it was ugly. Deng and those other guys too. Tyrus was also escorting KG to the basket early, though he got better.
The Bulls shot less than 30 percent and then gave not a drop of help defense...the game was REAL bad.
Ok, I just think you should frame it in the context of being in the beginning of a rebuilding year. They definitely regrouped and played more as a team as the game went on and didn't disintegrate like they did last year.

Gordon, Deng and Rose all played well. Thomas didn't score well, but he filled up the stat sheet. Noc and Noah were solid off the bench. So to me, that's pretty telling about the overall talent level of this team. We played well, at home, and lost to a good team. I think Kirk and Gooden would probably have helped if they'd been available and played well, but I don't think it's really have changed the result too much.

Despite his numbers, I really didn't like what I saw from Gordon in this game... too much dribbling and taking iffy shots. He disrupted the flow of things. But by and large... man our frontcourt gave us very little.
I think you're being too kind to Deng. He got abused by LBJ in the Cleveland game and didn't do much last night. His numbers may look good, but he had almost no impact on the game, and the expectations should be higher for him. I would have given him 0's for both. I would have given BG 0's for both games too, but a 1 and a -1 is pretty much the same thing.
Yeah, I think I'm going to reverse my spreadsheet so the most recent games are first. Yeah, Bullshooter, Deng's TOs, especially, were pretty brutal last night. I guess the way I'm trying to work this is as a long-run experiment. Everyone will probably find a nit to pick with a particular score, but over the longer run it'll balance out and give me a sense of where these guys stand.
Maybe if you listed your criteria we could get a better sense of how you were choosing. For instance, to me BG needs to do at least 3 of 4 of 30+ points, Ast/TO > 1.5, + in the +/- and shoot >45% to get a 1 or a good game rating. 17-29 points, Ast/TO 1-1.5, -7 to 0 in the +/- and 40-45% shooting is 0 game, that's what he averages. Deng would be something similar, maybe count rebounds (6+) and expect fewer points, and look at who he was guarding and how he did.
My criteria are simply my subjective perceptions I encourage everyone to keep a list like this, and see where it leads them. Will people surprise themselves or simply confirm their conceits?
