Patriots cheer election of Barack Obama

The focus was on football and Sunday’s game with the Buffalo Bills, but it didn’t stop Patriots [team stats] players yesterday from celebrating the election of the nation’s first black president.

Cornerback Deltha O’Neal said Barack Obama’s victory is reason to hope.

“I always grew up listening to some kid say, ‘I want to be President.’ They were black. I would look like, ‘Yeah, right.’ But the sky’s the limit,” O’Neal said. “It shows. I can tell my kids now, being as they’re black, it’s a possibility that you can (be president). You just got to shoot for the sky in your dreams. Whatever your dreams are, you’ve got to work hard at it.

“I’m pretty sure Obama worked hard at it, and he made his dreams come true. It’s just the sky’s the limit. Don’t ever put limits on yourself. Don’t ever let nobody put limits on yourself. That’s my motto,” he said.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs [stats] said the historical significance is all well and good, but that really isn’t the total point of having Obama elected.

“It was history man. It felt like a great moment, but not because we have a black president,” Hobbs said. “I think that’s a very skewed opinion. People think we’re excited just because there’s a black president. That’s not it. People are looking for change and hope. Regardless of what (John) McCain was bringing to the forefront, regardless of the good policies he had, the Barack ticket brought more hope and hope changed expecttaions.

“Sometimes man, you don’t necessarily need to fix the problem right then and there or tell me how, but put me at ease,” he added. “Let me know everything’s going to be OK, especially in a society right now that’s had so much panic, so much emotion, so many things flailing up and down. One word is said on the news and the Dow Jones plummets and everyone’s going berserk.

“Some people have that charisma, that presence to calm a situation down. He has that presence.”

O’Neal voted for Obama, simply believing he was the “right fit for the job.”

“I think he can get the job done. (President George) Bush is going to leave a lot on the plate for him,” O’Neal said. “There’s a lot of things he’s going to have to change, but as a country, we’re going to have to be behind him. We’re going to have to fight behind him, listen to his words of wisdom, and pray and hope things will change.”
