Using it for email. like name@name.com or something. I have this.

I just have a blog and a link to my flickr page. Used to have just a placeholder...don't update the blog really though.

what would you put on your "homepage".

    ??

I had a vanity site for about eight years. I used it for nothing but the e-mail address. I finally put up some pictures of my kids to keep people from bugging me about it.

It was very useful, because my e-mail wasn't an address at the underlying ISP, so I could change ISPs whenever I wanted to, and it would be transparent. That was much more important five and ten years ago then now, when you can easily get a free, unlimited account at gmail or yahoo or something like that. I could also direct e-mail from various sources to different "boxes." For example, when I signed up at ESPN, I used nameESPN@name.com, and then I could track who they gave my e-mail address to.

Recently the domain name expired, and I neglected to renew it.

I don't miss it one bit.

One problem was that I was getting a TON of spam. Some spammers got hold of my domain name, and were using it as a fake "return" e-mail address, so I was getting a lot of bounce-back e-mails.

I don't understand paying for email.

My website is just crap I put on my PSU storage space. I get 50 megs for free, so why not have a shitty little website? Click on my sig pic.

I like to have my own name as my domain. I can throw links up there too if I need to. Its a little better and more professional looking on a personal correspondence card vs. "Gmail.com" or what not.

Things were different eight years ago. Your e-mail address would have to be something like name123@isp.com, and whenever the isp pissed you off enough, and you bolted, you would have to tell all your contacts your new e-mail address. Back then, having your own domain solved that problem; you just changed the forwarding address and no one would need to know.

You also talk about getting 50 megs for free; I remember running up against the limit the first time I picked up a yahoo account, and having to delete old e-mails periodically.

yeah, just easier for me to tell people my email address is first@firstlast.com

makes it easier to remember if its a gmail, yahoo, blah blah blah.

i have several gmail and yahoo accounts though. Probably have 12 different email addresses for various stuff, but my primary is my name.
