I didn't see this posted here, but a huge disappointment for me on the Warriors. It's all but certain that Rowell is going to take over . http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2008/11/06/mullins-right-hand-man-fired/
Man Rowell seems like a dick, but I don't know what to think now. Mullin has been great at the draft, but he wanted to keep Baron instead of improve our rebounding/inside scoring situation. If we had Ellis and CJ Watson was healthy, we'd be rolling. We'd have a deep team IMO. The rookies would just need to get better and the team needs to get used to each other.
I'm trying to keep an open mind about it, but things are pointing to Mullin leaving. He's been quiet on most personnel matters, so it sounds like the way he would go out. As to who is going to take over the GM duties, it could be Nelson seeing that Riley got promoted. That would be a disaster just as much as seeing Rowell take over. The best scenario would be Mullin getting re-signed to a contract as long as Nelson's even though Rowell would still be his boss.
If I were Mullin, I would definitely be looking around for a new gig. Personally, I agreed with most of Mullin's choices and moves and disagree with Rowell's moves this season, and have disagreed with many moves that he's said to have done in the past. There's gotta be discussion and communication in this kind of business, especially at the top. According to everyone's sources and rumors, that's not the case. Mullin definitely lost it with the Garnett mishap, and that probably buried him because of all the choices he had to make to fix it dug him deeper and deeper. But even then he's been a better risk-taker and exec than we've had in the past.
Simply the sports management/ownership in the Bay Area for sports is very pitiful. I guess it would had been better journalism to have the author of this article give reasons from the people who made this decision on why he/they did this. But I don't understand the Jackson extension talks. That should not be the plan. The Maggette idea, was not bad in talent, but the amount of years and size of contract is another thing that goes along with Jackson's extension as being things that do not go with the direction of this franchise going back to trading JRich for Wright and then of course the loss of Baron and extensions of Andris and Monta. But it does seem like a Cohan/Rowell thing similar to the Mookie Blaylock addition years ago, the Jamison extension/huge contract that went way above what anyone else would have paid for him, etc.
Some new scuttlebutt about Nelson : "Amidst the turmoil in Golden State, some around the NBA are speculating that it is Don Nelson's behind-the-scenes master plan (he got his close friend Larry Riley installed in upper management) to force out Chris Mullin to enable his son, Donn, to move over from Dallas…" The source of the rumor is from Sam Smith (or whatever stuff he made up for today) .
I don't think this is true. Nelson would be a huge backstabber with his old friend. Sounds like it is made up.
