There was a commercial on Las Vegas tv last night that featured a good looking woman with two people who had some sort of physical handicap. The woman speaking mentioned how this charity she was speaking for helped those who are intellectually challenged.

Then a handicapped girl spoke, she was obviously mentally normal but physically handicapped.

I just thought this commercial was offensive as I have never heard people use that term intellectually challenged.

It just seemed to me that they were trying so hard to be politically correct that they went so far as to be offensive in doing so.

I wouldn't like being called intellectually challenged no matter how true it is..(cuz I is)

Intellectual disability is the new PC phrase for retarded people.

Challenged is not too far from disabled.

A blind person is physically disabled, and while having a high IQ might still be considered to be intellectually challenged due to the obvious challenge of learning without eyesight.

If some dude told me that I was intellectually challenged because I was blind, I would be a blind guy kicking some ass.

I would really find offense with that term if I were someone people said it about.

Just for fun, here is a link to the definition of the word.

    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/intellect

I would actually think that the person who came up with that phrase should be the one it applies to.

Not only that, but calling a blind person that implies that you think the person you are talking to is an idiot. As if one wouldn't know that being blind might cause issues.

and here's a link for the other half of the phrase:

Depending on how it is meant it could be an insult, or high praise.

Nothing wrong with being challenged. Our highest achievers actually seek out or create challenges to conquer.

Ok, then you are penis challenged.
    And appearance challenged.

My point about the phrase being offensive was mostly that the woman said it about people who were physically challenged as in they were crippled physically.

And if you think penis challenged is high praise...........

It depends on whether one can rise to meet the challenge.

Hypersensitivity blows. It never ceases to amaze me how many people are so eager to be offended that they project their offense onto other people even when there is no malicious intent. Liberal fascism at it's funniest.

The cool thing at least is that the word retarded doesn't even mean what it used to.

So, I can use cool phrases like

Man, Bob is so dumb he could out retard a box of retards.

    AWESOME.

(I still wish the dude in the wheelchair on the tv commercial would have slapped that woman)

I mean, they probably wouldn't have shown the commercial that way, but I could have seen it on youtube. :ghoti:
