http://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8291 200 million??? They need to get a few more arms in their rotation first, imo.
The Nationals dont need to be paying anyone that kind of money. What if Teixeira gets hurt? The nationals have too many problems for Teixeria to get them deep into the playoffs. They need to follow the Rays lead and build through the farm system and sign mid level players who can fill a nice role for them. Also sign your young players to long term cheap contracts like Evan Longoria signed when you find a great young player from your system I love the Scott Olson and Josh Willingham trade and I think those two players can play pretty good for them next year. If I was the Nationals GM for 20-25 Million combined I would look at signing: For 1B: Kevin Millar Utility IF: Nick Punto/ David Eckstein Maybe Edgar Renteria at SS or 2B OF: Milton Bradley would be a huge additon to their offense but will likely want to stay a DH in the AL so Raul Ibanez is a really good player who can mentor their young OFs. Utlity OF/1B: Mark Kotsay or Eric Hinske Pitchers: Paul Byrd Brandon Lyon- Setup Damaso Marte Maybe even a non-roster invite to Mark Prior and hope he doesnt get injured. These are all guys who can fill a role that the Nationals need to play decently until they can develop a good enough farm system to help them long term, they really need some veteran leadership and currently they are building with some bad character guys.
