I bought a longer Ethernet cable today that I needed to connect, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I followed the instructions about connecting to a wired connection and I can't connect. I have Comcast high speed service. If someone could help me, that'd be great because I've never played online before.

Hey M21 :) I did a little research and i'm pretty sure you would need to get a wireless router to be able to have PS3 connection.

Well, I plug the Ethernet cable into my PS3 and into the back of my Comcast modem and it doesn't connect properly.

I have never tried it that way, mine worked through a router, both wireless or wired.

I wonder if you need the router even if you've unplugged the computer's connection?

You need to reboot your modem if you unplug from your computer and then plug into the PS3. I know it is stupid, but for some reason the modem doesnt connect/transfer correctly when changing from computer to PS3.

Just unplug the modem for 1 min then plug it back in and connect to the PS3. Just make sure before you plug the modem back in the ethernet is disconnected from the computer.

Then what would be the point of a Ethernet slot?

I must admit thats the one of very few things PS3 has over the 360. You can use any USB Dongle to connect to the Internet, and you can use any Nluetooth headset to talk.

I tried that last night actually and still no result. Apparently it can't pick up an IP address. I know my IP address to put it in manually, but it needs all sorts of other information in order to confirm the step and I have no idea what the hell the rest are.

Hmm, that has always worked for me. I guess calling your ISP would be the next step.

Yeh I know the 360 has Certain Routers and Services which makes it a lot easier to connect to. Maybe the same with PS3 but a big company like Comcast should work fine

I've contacted Sony for technical support. Hopefully I receive a reply in the morning.
