It's pretty crazy to think that the Civil War could decide who goes to the Rose Bowl. I might be repeating myself a few times in this post, so forgive me. And someone please correct me if I got this wrong. If Oregon wins today (which I think they will), that means OSU is 6-1, UO is 6-2, and UA is 4-3. That basically eliminates UA from the RB, I believe. They would have 3 losses, and for them to make it the Beavers would have to go 0-2 over the next two weeks. However, if the Beavers went 0-2 (and UO wins tonight), UO would then go to the RB (I think) with a record of 7-2 in the Pac-10. If Arizona wants to go to the RB, they have to win out starting today. They need to beat UO, OSU and ASU (and therefore be 7-2). But if they lose to UO, they can't make it. They would be, at best, 6-3. And if they lose to Oregon, Oregon holds the tie-breaker with UA and therefore goes to the RB. If UO wins tonight, and if OSU loses next week, OSU can still make it to the RB by beating the Ducks the following week. Right? There is always the wrench that if OSU loses both games, that USC (if they lose to Stanford) could make it because they didn't get an invite to a BCS game. I think. Did I get this right?
The Rose Bowl is a BCS game. The only way USC would not go to the Rose Bowl if they win the Pac-10 would be if they were playing in the National Championship game.
Correct. Rose Bowl gets dibs on the top Pac-10 team, unless they're in the Championship game. However, if the Beavs win out then USC could go to a different BCS bowl because the Rose Bowl spot is taken by OSU. But for the Ducks to make it, USC has to either lose or go to the national championship, neither likely seeing as how UCLA is their next opponent, but crazier things have happened.
From the Beavers own website "Because Oregon State defeated then-No. 1 USC 27-21 on Sept 21, the Beavers hold the tiebreaker for a Rose Bowl berth should both teams win out. Oregon State visits Arizona next weekend before hosting Oregon in the Civil War rivalry game." All they need to do to go to the RB is win out
Actually, now that I think about it if USC loses to UCLA, and OSU beats Arizona but loses to the Ducks, then I'm not sure what would happen because all three would be tied with 2 Pac-10 losses. Oregon State would hold the tie breaker over USC. USC would hold the tie breaker over the Ducks, and the Ducks would hold the tie breaker over the Beavers. So who would go then? I would guess at that point the Rose Bowl gets to choose, and obviously they'd chose USC.
LOL! That would be awesome. either way, i'm REALLY proud of this state right now! Oregon, OS, and the Blazers are badass! The only 2 sports I REALLY care about are Blazers BBall (NBA) and Ducks Football (NCAA Football)... so it was a great Saturday! Our state is being repped well... and I don't really see a lot of "We are better than you because we beat them and you didn't!" "Well we beat them and you didn't! And we beat them by more!" etc... its a really fun time in sports right now! Go Ducks! Go Blazers! Go Beavs! (except in the civil war) Oregon is 22 in the coaches (only one that matters from the AP/Coaches) and OS is 21! And then Oregon is 24 in the AP and OS is 21 again (this one doesn't matter though)... can't wait til the BCS ratings come out! Would this be the first week OS is ranked in the BCS? Ya'll weren't ranked last week were you?
Cal was the tougher opponent which the Beavers took care of. If the Beavers don't back down they will take care of Arizona next week.
If we were to get to a three way tie between USC, OSU and UO AND each of those teams had won one and lost one against the other first place teams, I'm pretty sure the next tiebreaker is longest time since last appearance, which would give OSU the nod. A big grain of salt with that because the tiebreaker might've changed and my memory might be wrong about the rule.
Contrasting with the state of Washington...(and I went to Navy, so I don't have a dawg in the fight): UW: 0-10, and yet the last line I saw for the Apple Cup with WSU (1-10) showed the Huskies as 8.5 point favorites. The Huskies are being outscored an average of 28-9 this year...which is better than the 40-5 average WSU's giving up. Oh yeah, Ty Willingham's already been fired, but sticking around as a lame duck. Seahawks: 2-7 and just got their quarterback back...but he has "Back and knee issues" and most of the WRs are hurt. Holmgren's retiring. They can't run the ball. Tough times. Mariners: Worst record in the AL but can't even get the #1 draft pick in the next draft (thank you, Nationals!) Had Richie Sexson, Jose Vidro, Miguel Cairo prominently involved in the offense. OKC: We won't go there.
