I was at the Rose Garden last night and at times it was deafening loud, particularly during the De-Fense chants. Sure, I saw a lot of people standing up and screaming their heads off, but given the loudness of the De-Fense chants I think there is a decent chance that the Rose Garden pumps in some crowd noise. Just curious what others thought. Is the Rose Garden really that loud, or is part of it artificial crowd noise.

I seriously doubt it. In fact the NBA has a cap as to how loud the arenas can be. at EVERY NBA game there is someone somewhere with a decibel meter making sure it does not exceed the max volume this includes crowd noise. If the crowd is insanely loud for some reason, it is the Blazers responsibility to quiet them down by changing the chants and what not on the big screen.

With as shaky as that new sound system is, if they were piping it in, we would be able to tell.

If an acoustic engineer does his job right you can get some amazing amplification effects just from the particular construction of an arena ... and considering how quiet it gets in there when things are stagnant I have no reason to believe they pump up the chants electronically or otherwise augment sound beyond good engineering.

I doubt it because the empty FedEx forum would of installed it by now.

Yeah --- I thought I was going a little crazy conspiracist -- but I just was kind of looking around and the loudness of the cheering just wasn't fitting quite what I was seeing. Now I was at the very top of the Rose Garden, so maybe it gets louder up there then on the floor -- with the sound bouncing off the walls and coming back at me. Thanks for easing my suspicions.

I was at the Cavs/Hawks game here in Cleveland on Saturday, and could clearly notice the fake noise in the building. People weren't even banging their thundersticks (hehe), and yet you could hear the "bang bang Defense bang bang" beat.

The Nets arena does this all the time. It's hard to make a lot of noise when there's only 5 people in the entire arena.

It's not that they pump in crowd noise, exactly. It's that the 3/4ths of the arena where you aren't sitting is filled with robots, not humans.

I got it from an employee of the Blazers. I'm not talking about an usher. I'm talking about someone who has worked for the Blazers on the corporate side for over 10 years and knew every little detail about the Rose Garden including the types of artwork hanging on the inside of Paul Allen's apartment.

I really don't think they would or have ever tried to quiet the crowd. I know they can play music and other stuff only so loud though.

That would be the best/easiest job in the world lol. Go to game, watch little meter at noisy times, enjoy game. Rinse and repeat.

I don't think they ever have, but if it does go beyond the level they are supposed to do things like change the music playing, encourage chants instead of just yelling, etc.

You can tell in some arenas that they pump in a lot of sound, mainly New Jersey and I think Orlando. When I go to games in the RG, I see a ton of people chanting defense in the 300 level.. I'd be quite disappointed if the Blazers did pump in crowd noise because we don't need it.

I would guess there absolutely is artificial noise. At every arena.

I've been a season ticket holder the last two seasons, and I don't believe at all that the RG is piping in the "defense" chant whatsoever. It really is that loud. I'll try to see if I can hear any artificial "defense" chants tonight vs Miami.
