Although I can see the reasoning behind going for either one...what would you do if you were the Minnesota brass? Cassel who will be a free agent can (probably) will demand in upwards of 9-10 mil a year. Who else but Minnesota would be willing to front that? I like this since it will allow the Vikes to use thier first two draft picks onhelp outside of QB...where as I can see Minnesota swinging a deal to get McNabb they would still draft a QB high (if the underclass crop comes out early) as a understudy to McNabb for the next couple years. The way he's been playing I think Cassel would be a great fit in Minnesota and could get them deep into the playoffs, if not the Superbowl....a good QB that minimizes mistakes is all that's keeping them from being serious contenders....the Tavaris Jackson project and Ferotte making a habit of killing countless drives with pick-offs....it just hurts being a Viking fan knowing were so close. Oh....ummm...we really need to get rid of Childress....ugh....I just don't want to get into that one....
I haven't watched a ton of Cassel this year, so I'm not sure exactly how much of it is his skill vs. how much of it is the system he plays in. But still, I'd take him over McNabb...he just looks done.
Yeah...I just don't see any team being able to show more effort in getting a QB since that's all Minnesota really NEEDS to compete. And any one of the two (even an declining McNabb) would be leaps and bounds ahead of what Minnesota has now.
You have to give something up to get McNabb, he's also older and declining. I think it's an easy choice.
McNabb hasn't been THAT bad this season. I think he can rebound but his other problem is that he has trouble staying healthy.
Cassel has Randy Moss, and a great receiving corpse to work with, McNabb has nobody. It's hard to have a successful season when your coach's philosophy is pass the ball 80% of the time and run the ball 20% of the time. It also doesn't help that McNabb has no targets to throw the ball to 80% of the time, and that the offensive line has been terrible all season long with the loss of Shawn Andrews. It doesn't help the cause that the running game is also pretty much non-existent because Westbrook has been injured for pretty much the entire season, and has been pretty much a non factor after like the third week of the season. Unless you are Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, I fail to see how any quarterback would have success with the situation McNabb has been put into. So I wouldn't exactly call McNabb done...
Yeah but having Moss frees things open for other guys. And for the record, I'm not downplaying Cassel in any way. He had two 400 yard performances in a row, and has been very impressive ever since Tom Brady went down with an injury. Just merely saying that I don't think it's fair to write off McNabb's playing career just yet. He has absolutely no help in Philly, and besides the two I've already mentioned, I don't see how any other QB can do any better with the situation he has been presented.
I'm trying to look at the pros and cons of each one. In getting Cassel, Minnesota keeps thier picks and we all know that after the spending spree that Ziggy preformed this past off-season he'll be more than willing to come out the pocket to get that all important piece to build his team as Super Bowl contenders. The other thing that alot of people forget to realize is that Minnesota is trying to get approved for a stadium...and keep from having thier team get move offers to the likes of LA. What better to draw a crowd and raise excitment than a newly aquired McNabb and a freshly drafted Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow for the Vikes to pass over the keys to Minnesota's new Stadium in a couple years. Thiers no doubt McNabb would help sell tickets....but I wouldn't fault Minnesota for getting either one. The difference in the two is getting Cassel you get him with the intention of having him your franschise QB for present and future....with McNabb you get a vast upgrade to what we currently have and a nice teacher for who ever the Vikes draft. Put all our eggs in one basket or build for selling tickets and a more solid chance at keeping the Vikes in 'Sota. Like I said before....I'd be happy either way...anything would be better! Oh and fire Childress!!!! lol
Yeah of course, with Moss being the deep ball threat he is, that opens up those short and intermediate zones Cassel likes.
True, Moss can open up any team's offense, but I'm talking about how Cassel will fit in with Minnesota. I like him because he is exactly what the Vikings need, a QB that minimizes mistakes and can pickapart an offense that stacks the the line against "AD". Cassel can be a perfect fit....can you imagine what happens everytime the team stacks against "AD"? Fake a hand off to him and scramble the other way...with Cassel's scrambling ability he can consistently get 60-75 yds on the ground alone
He's not going to rush for a thousand yards, lol , but actually I think you'll be fine with either QB. :]
lol....maybe when I used the word consistently I should have clarified it...lol...I didn't mean to say he would average that and get 1000 yards, but that when they play a team that stacks the line to stop Peterson he would be a consistent threat to get 60-75 yards....lol...sorry for the confusion...I'll make sure I clear up my verbage so as not to be taken so literal...lol But I agree that either player would be a great upgrade over watching Ferotte throwing INT after INT during crucial drives
Unfortunatly as of right now and the way Cassel has stepped in for Brady...he can ask for that much and will get it...namely from the Vikings, since Ziggy Wilf has deep pockets and knows a QB is what's keeping the Vikings from being serious contenders.
let him ask all he wants. i wouldn't give it to him. if another team will, let them. he's not worth it.
You might be right, but I think he is worth it. I've seen every snap he has taken this year and it's clear to me that he is the real deal.
I've seen most of the snaps from his best games since one was on a Thursday night, and the other was a local Miami game. He played well but I wouldn't guarantee anything pejorative or positive about how he will turn out career-wise. I think the Vikings will benefit from various QBs on the free agent/trade market anyway.
