huevon brought this up in the game thread. We only have two point guards on the roster right now. Fisher and Farmar. Although it may not seem like a big problem right now, if one of the two go down with an injury, we're kind of screwed. I guess we can shift Kobe over to point guard at times, but I don't want to have him wasting his energy defending guys like Chris Paul. Sasha could be an option, but I don't trust his ball-handling ability, way too erratic at times. Also, I like how Farmar's been playing this season, but last year he started out strong, but finished off the season pretty horribly. I don't know how much of that was due to lack of motivation, or fatigue, but I don't want that happening again. Like huevon said, it would be nice to bring in another point guard off the bench to play for Farmar during these garbage minutes, since there's really no point in having him out there. Sun Yue could be an option, but he never suits up and he's going to the D-League. Damon Stoudimire, Jeff Mcinnis, Derrick Martin (played for the Raptors), and Smush Parker are all available. We should give someone a call. I'm sure Stoudimire would love to jump onto a championship contender. Wouldn't mind having Smush back either.
Those players would still be there if an injury were to occur. We would also probably activate Sun Yue....theres no need to risk bringing in a dumbass right now.
Assuming an injury occurs, I'd rather have someone like Stoudimire, or someone who has NBA experience over Sun Yue, who is obviously nowhere close to being ready for NBA basketball. And I don't want to have us signing someone at the spur of the moment just because of injury, I don't think you can expect to plug them into the triangle offense and have them get familiar with it right off the bat.
Triangle isnt a normal PG style offense. Kobe, Odom, and whichever of Fisher/Farmar will be fine. They can switch on defense with Ariza getting more play so Kobe wont get burnt out. Just not Sasha...at all
He's better then that lol, but he really does suck. He hasn't played a minute yet for the Grizzlies. That's saying something.
Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind having Smush back as a 3rd string PG. He knows the offense and would only be playing garbage minutes or backup minutes. I think he'd be good with the bench mob if Fish were to go down and Farmar moved to the starting role, or if Farmar went down, I think Smush could move right into that bench mob.
Lets think playoffs here. maybe farmar's game drops a bit toward the end of reg season like last season, but that aint gonna change nothing come playoffs. When we have rare blowout oppurtunities in the playoffs (im sure we will have a few games that are certain wins) we can use luke, sun yue, dacos, mihm and powell. sun or luke would be fine to finish off a game instead of farmar burning up his overall playoff energy, if its all about saving breath then we are fine. But, in case of injury id think we would a little insurence which sun does not provide. i think we need to sign a third point gaurd, a filler type guy, damon stoudamire could be a great choice, a quick little guy can burn out some oposing players and get a couple of points in the ending stages of a sealed win, though he's getting old. smush i say no to based on the fact that he didnt work at all when he was here last time, if we could get javaris that would be great, but unlikely i suppose. idk. jeff mckinnis could turn to be quite good but something about him makes me think starbury, just a locker room cancer, idk. id say at this point mighty mouse could be the man for the job.
Yeah Brian, I actually am a bit troubled about our PG position should one of our people go down. I wouldn't mind the names that came up in this thread though.
Smush would be an adequate third stringer. He's got a lot of talent, he's just a moron. I wouldn't mind looking at Stoudamire. He'd be a solid PG for this offense since he's a fantastic outside shooter. As for Java...it's tough to be in his situation right now when he's got 4 lottery picks (Gay, Mayo, Lowry, Conley) that play the positions he can play (PG and SG).
