Just food for thought. Its 14 games into the season and i was thinking about the RJ trade and what benefits the nets have gained/lost from it. We all know the benefits of the Kidd trade where already the nets have done well this season, and so far most will agree is paying dividends. Now the RJ trade brought us Yi and Simmons. Even though both start we have a sf and a pf that are producing sorta of and i just wonder........what if the nets didn't do the trade where would they be now. Had we not done the trade the starting lineup would be Harris and carter in the back court, with RJ Brook and say Ryan Anderson in the front line. You would lose Yi's 10 pts average and inconsistent play, and you would lose Simmons 5 pts a game and what he brings to the table. You would gain RJ who is averaging like 18/5 a game. I was watching RJ play tonight on nba tvand his game is pretty much the same as it was in NJ. I believe that RA would average at least 10 pts a game or more if he were starting. So i would have to say this year the nets would be about 13 pts more effective on offense. Defense would be a bit better with RJ replacing Simmons, and Ryan replacing Yi. So what do you think, are the nets better with this trade so early in the season? Or are we just going to say potential, potential, potential?? Had the nets not made the trade would the nets be a much surer shot to make the playoffs? RJ was in the prime of his career and never wanted to leave Jersey. Your thoughts please....... oh yeah, go nets!!!
Trades are not made for 14 games...they are made for the length of the contracts traded. RJ has three years left. Yi and Simmons have two years left. Too early to make any determination. RJ is 7 years older than Yi as well and makes less than a third of his salary. But do note the Nets are 7-7 and the Bucks are 7-10, something you didnt factor into the equation.
well i didn't factor at all cause they are two different teams with different styles. My real question is would the nets be better if RJ played those 14 games in a nets uniform, and would the nets be at 7-7 with him or better or worse?
and it is early to determine the true success of the trade, but i'm just wondering what if they never made the trade. I understand the cap situtation and all, but i'm just saying would the nets be better in the short run...
Can a mod just sticky this? This RJ and Kidd what ifs come up 3 times a week. Time warp questions and beating dead horses...
i haven't seen this mentioned all week, or for the past few weeks anyway, but i guess its not politically correct enough for this forum.. I just thought it would be an interesting topic on an off game night...
We can't judge this deal until the summer of 2010. When we go after LBJ, Bosh, Wade, Amare etc etc and see what we can do then we can judge the trade. Although I have doubts we can get a big name star player. LBJ is absolutely out. IMO he's a Knick regardless of what the rosters look like. Call me pessimestic. The trade was made primarily to become players in 2010 with the bonus of hoping Yi can become a real good player and help sell tickets. So... we wait.
I'm asking this to be sticky. So we can consolidate all the posts into 1. It's viable and it gets bought up every week. Group with with the stalking Kidd and RJ thread.
this topic isn't to say if it were a good trade or not, and of course only time will tell. It could take 3 years for yi to become a superstar, and then it would be a moot point. The question is what if we didn't do it would the nets be better now? or next year. Is RJ better than yi and simmons now? Would the nets be better now? The trade is done and nothing can be done about it. I was in favor of the trade at the time casue i felt the big 3 experiment was a failure after 3 years of trying. But since the emergence of Brook and Ryan i'm wondering if we would have been better off this year had we not made the RJ trade... Thats the topic i wanted to discuss.
Nobody was answering nets1 the question. OK, let me be the first. I would tell you if we had have RJ now, we are a much balanced team, and we don't need to get confused about the clog problem we have in the frontcourt. If we have Harris, VC, and Jefferson, we probably have the most destructive backcourt, although we already have within Harris and Carter. So if we have RJ instead of Simmons, we probably would be better, because Simmons is 5ppg player, while RJ is 18ppg player. And we can have plenty time to be shared to Boone, Ryan, Sean, Lopez, even Swift.Unless Simmons could be at least a consistent 3pt shooter, and Yi can be more consistent, then we are the winner of this trade. If we can get LeBron, then we can win more, but it seems not likely right now. Right now, the best the Nets can get is the revenue and the eyes attracted from China, and we can get more love, if China fans like the Nets.
The Nets were 34-48 last season in case you forgot and I am not measuring this value of a trade 14 games in. It's just plain silly. Nor do I think it's worth measuring this trade outside the context of the other trades, picks, free agency signings, etc., the team has made since last February, with which I am very happy. I liked RJ, but how many times over the past three years did we hear trade rumors--real ones, later confirmed--in which RJ was being offered around the league, for Deng and the Bulls pick, for Bargnani and Kapono, for Jermaine O'Neal, etc., etc. Why were the Nets so willing to dump him, even in 2006 and 2007?
No one is asking anyone is grade the trade, right now. He's simply asking how the Nets would be doing, right now. There is a difference. We'd probably be a bit better, maybe one or two more wins, but it's certainly not worth giving up the future for.
Personally, I think this trade was made to dump RJ's big contract and bad lockeroom presence. Thornkipedia worked their magic and landed us a special young player in Yi who can only get better. So in my eyes, we won this trade hands down. Even if Yi turns out to be a bust.
RJ turned into a player who needed the ball to be effective. Vince is the same type of player but he is much better at it. The Nets did not need two scoring wings and when it was time to start over they traded the inferior player. I'll always like RJ but he had to go.
