Look how high Joel ranks! Look how high the whole team ranks defensively. I guess our defense doesn't suck as much as we thought. And notice that the Lakers do not lead the league - in fact, they're behind us, despite an easier schedule. It's also fun to compare players like Batum and Ariza (very close, and Ariza's 3-point shooting has fallen off a cliff) and Bynum and... Joel (no contest - Bynum is good but Joel is spectacular).

 

Our last couple of games have been very good for us defensively - the things we were harping on - staying in front of the opposing PG have been much better - and both Blake and Sergio deserve credit for it.

We basically went from #30 in the league in defensive efficiency before Greg came back to #27, #25 and now #16.

Their defense is definitely improving. Before Oden came back, Portland was the worst team in the NBA at points given up per 100 possessions. Before last night's game, that ranking was up to #22. They're definitely improving in that respect.

 

3 blowout wins will tend to move the stat numbers.

Several posters did say to wait a bit on those nasty defensive rating numbers, as those numbers were based on what was billed as one of the toughest opening schedules ever.

Now that we hit the road, things get tough again.

 

I love the fact that we don't have to rely on whether or not the refs decide to call a silly/or BS foul on our starting center only to send him to the bench for a quarter. (for example when Brad Miller slid his arm underneath Gregs arm and flopped to the floor) Now we lose nothing by having our other defensive presence come in. And some wanted to trade Joel in the summer..........

 

And I couldn't understadn that. We were so lacking on interior D when Joel went out last year I was looking forward to this year when we could have great interior D for pretty much 48 mins and that's how it's turn out when Greg's healthy. Plus there always the chance of injury.

 

Looking at top ten player rankings I was surprise not to see any Blazers. Well one, but not for a good stat. I guess part is we spread the mins out so much, but not even 3 pt percentage which I thought we had a couple players near the top. Guess because it's just the last 10 games?
