Personally, I think Beans is getting the short end of the stick here. He's not playing crappy. He's not playing. AB is probably averaging close to ten minutes less than the other starters which means he's losing time to Nelson and his small ball.
I honestly can't say I hated the offseason moves, with the exception of the Maggette signing, and even then, I thought he would be better for us. Too bad Brand didn't pan out, as even overpaying him would help us a lot more than overpaying Maggette. Of course most of those moves were made without the knowledge of the Monta injury, so without that hindsight, things may not be that bad. Then later, of course, there was the unnecessary Jackson extension, I think that is going to limit our flexibility going forward. Not signing Baron to a 5 year deal: good (hurts now, but will be good in a few years). Letting Pietrus walk: good. Letting Barnes walk: OK. Barnes frustrates me, but even with his new salary of $1.2M, he's not outrageously priced for what you get. Randolph and Hendrix signings: very good, but Hendrix could probably help this team right now instead of being in the D-league, and Randolphs minutes are being randomly jerked around by Nellie (no surprise). Maggette signing: bad, desperation move, and I was suckered by his stats. This guy is not a team player and will not lead the Warriors to anything notable. Picking up Morrow: good. He's not the savior, but he's dirt cheap and I think his shot will return at some point. All the other random guards they brought in were just scrambling reactions to Monta's injury. EDIT: Oops, forgot Turiaf: good signing if the team were better and if Nelson utilized him better. It's almost like Nelson is afraid to play it straight.
LOL. This mess starts from the top. Right now, we should have Baron at PG, the way Mullin envisioned this team. When you lose your best player and get Maggette, then the team was bound to take a big hit. We never really had a chance to land Elton Brand as he used the Warriors as leverage, so he could get a huge payday in Philly and play back east. Then, Mullin was forced to make some ridiculous offer for Gilbert Arenas. That sure sounds like Cohan trying to make up for a mistake he thought he made. Now we got Cohan's right hand man, Rowell running the show, or should I say Nelson who is the basketball brain in the front office for now. For example, what did he say before about Monta? He said that he should play PG or else he doesn't have value on the team. How frickin' wrong was idiot Nelson about that? Nelson should have just retired, but now he's forcing his friend and the man who brought him here Chris Mullin, out. The guy is Judas and cancer just like he was when took over the Warriors in early 90s.
You guys should sign a better coach, there are quite a few available. JVG, Flip, Carlesimo, Jordan, and Musselman. I think Flip should be top on that list.
Agree totally. Is there any worse "best player on a team" than Stephen Jackson? Its not Jack's fault, hes actually impressed me a lot so far this season but thats just flat out not good enough in the NBA. This roster sucks ass in general and we're the youngest team in the league. Jack is shooting 40% FGs, Mags is shooting 43%, Crawford is shooting 34%. There is no starting PG. There is no starting PF. Nellies trying to make something happen with this team but how much can he do when we have two positions with no starting quality players to fill in? How many teams do well without a true superstar? Jack is nice but hes never even really been close to an all-star bid and hes the man on our team right now. Nellie's moves might be frustrating when they don't work but is there anything else we can do? At this point I don't have confidence in throwing Wright, Randolph, and Turiaf out there for long periods of time. I don't think those guys can win us games at all at this point. I think we're still in try-to-win mode until Monta comes back, then there will be a period with Monta back to see if we can actually compete. If we can win with Monta we'll keep trying to win. If not, probably we'll develop the young guys more, trade some contracts, and tank for a nice draft pick.
I don't think we even have a prayer of winning without Monta (and even with him it's pretty sketchy), therefore I want to see Nelson develop those young players NOW, while we're waiting for Monta. Play Wright, Belinelli, Morrow, and Randolph 35-40 minutes a game each. I'm serious about that, why not? How much worse could they be than what we are witnessing now? I mean I know it'll never happen because you have all those highly-paid "veterans" like Maggette, Jackson, and Crawford clogging up the lineup and Nellie just loves those guys and will play them the whole game even if the team is in a death spiral. Freakin' depressing. Unless Nelson leaves or is booted out, I don't see a way out of it.
Basically, all 3 or 4. In order of magnitude: 1. Cohan is to blame because of all the bad decisions he's made in the past and now regarding Rowell and how they are dealing with Mullin. 2. This is close, but I blame Nelson more because he continues to play small ball when it's clearly not working. He cannot adapt his coaching to fit the players he has. Second, he's not developing the young players as he said he would do. Third, I suspect he has something to do with Mullin being forced out. He may not be directly involved, but it sure is funny that he gets more input and run under Rowell. Plus he has his right hand man Riley practically in as the next GM. Nelson has worn out his welcome everywhere he's been since leaving Golden State the first time -- New York, Dallas, and now Golden State again. 3. Rowell. He's the main reason why Mullin won't be back after the season. 4. The players. They have something directly to do with the losses, but one needs to clean up the front office mess before we can evaluate where we stand with the players. One thing we know for sure is Nelson is signed up to be the coach this year and two more years after that. However, I don't think he'll last that long.
Nellie never has been a very good coach IMO, he's a gimmick guy who's caught some teams napping with his unusual match ups and that's it. It also makes players sloppy and careless after playing in such a wide open style after a while. I think there is some talent on this team, but a new coach is imperative in order to do something with it. I mean giving up 130+ to the Knicks and Heat??? what the hell. Chemistry can be sited as an issue for sure after losing your PG and best player in Baron and having Ellis go down, but should it be this bad?? I hope Mullin is able to regain control over the direction of the team and ditch Nelson for a competent coach who can get this team playing respectable ball this year and maybe develop the young bigs the team has drafted the last 2 years if the playoffs are not a possibility. Keeping Nelson for the year only hinders the development of the young guys and teaches everyone bad habits IMO.
Monta is a scorer, a beautiful scorer, but that's it. He's not a leader; he's not someone who makes his teammates better (he'll make the sweet dish inside after penetration but how many times have you seen him hit the guy coming of a screen at just the right time? Um, never) He's not the answer. Yes the Warriors are not going to win with the youngsters out there, but they are going to get better and the team will be better in the long run. Aside from the monster superstars, LeBron, Wade, Carmelo, everyone needs some time to grow in the NBA. Kobe was not a superstar right away, nor was Bosh, Billips, Dirk, Nash. Even Duncan needed some time (Admiral was the top dog at the start, with Sean Elliot).
The rub is the Warriors' upper management, i.e. Cohan and Rowell, have got this thang ass backwards. Nelson got a contract extension for two more years after this while Mullin is left twisting in the wind. There is a better chance Mullin ends up being the GM of the Knicks and the Warriors end up Rowell, Larry Riley (Nelson's right hand man from Dallas days), and Nelson .
Now that is sad... why can't these morons in management figure it out.. Nellie hasn't won jack shit worth mentioning since the 80's when he had a very good Bucks team. He must know how to give a good interview or tell ownership what they want to hear.
He's won the most NBA games than anybody else as a head coach. He did a fine job developing those Maverick teams. Trust me, we have seen much worse than Don Nelson as head coach here in Oakland. If you want to make suggestions for another head coach, I want to hear your argument(s). To say that he is horrible and hasn't done anything, is just ridiculous. Coaches who haven't done jack are PJ Carlesemo, Mike Montgomery, Brian Winters, etc. At least this team is competing. What kind of expectations did you all have? This is not a great team. Potential? perhaps. Nelson has made a lot of mistakes. But I think he's doing a decent job so far. At least he is making the players earn their PT, though maybe he goes a little too far with the youngsters in that aspect. The team has been competitive for the most part. They have had a lot of close losses. The team just is missing their closer, which was Baron in the past. I mean the team was this close from blowing that Portland game, just as they did last night's game vs Miami.
For the record, I have not once said "Fire Nellie" for the exact reason you're stating. I say give him a chance to redeem himself this season. We're obviously stuck with him, for better or for worse. I think he's a great coach with a very difficult task of losing his #1 player on a very young team. I just want him to be more consistent with PT for Wright and putting him or Turiaf in with Biedrins. Is that too much to ask? I've pretty much given up on him playing Marco significant minutes. I guess I'll shut up about that now. It's apparently not happening.
There should be a new team rule. If Don Nelson said he had no plans to play Maggette at PF, then he should stick to that comment he said during the summer. It's ridiculous. If he and his staff just get Turiaf or Wright out there next to Biedrins to close the 4th, we can actually secure the rebound and avoid the 4th quarter meltdown! Jax or Mags at PF is just asking to get killed, especially when they're surrounded by guys too small that also like to shoot. Nelson cannot control the tempo with the style he is playing. He's got to be a halfcourt guy who knows how to use all of his pieces, not just his 3-point shooting, ball-handling ones. If Nelson isn't. I say f him and get anybody that at least knows how to coach the all-around game. Only 1 guy can shoot, 5 guys all have to play D. I'm tired of watching/hearing about this team losing when we have a chance to at least keep games close if Nelson just plays Wright more in the beginning and closes out with his veterans at the RIGHT positions. We may lose, but at least the rookies get burn, and the team stays competitive at the end rather than losing it at the beginning because they played too small and high risk. If they win 38 wins, that's something to build on considering this team's chances weren't that good anyway because of their questionable 4-spot rotation and lack of a true point guard with basic nba shooting guard skill level. I thought Montgomery was annoying for his starting lineups, but at least it wasn't cock-a-mamy "let's play everybody one position bigger and get killed in the most important facets of winning basketball such as defense and rebounding; and let's take some really bad shots too because we can't move the ball inside/out due to lack of post players." Don Nelson... ugly ass ball. This game Friday better have a different strategy. That's all I can say. I just can't take it anymore... I mean I should grateful we kept it close because he gave Turiaf + Wright a total of something like 50 minutes of play time, but the way he closed in the 4th was just ass... It's like he was trying to lose on purpose.
Oh of course. The last comment I made in this thread was directed to CelticFan. I agree with getting more lineups with two bigs from Turiaf/Wright/Biedrins in there, and maybe go with 3 bigs by adding Randolph as SF. If he doesn't make that adjustment (or at least something to not give up 20+ offensive boards/night), like you want, then I will then need to confess that I have been overestimating the coaching abilities of Don Nelson, and maybe some major changes need to be made.
