The smart money is on Bryan Colangelo already having someone lined up to take over the team, much like when Rob Babcock was fired to make way for BC a few years ago. Who is it, or who do you want it to be?
I think BC is being respectful to Smitch by saying that Triano will coach out the season. He's just giving Smitch time to leave Toronto gracefully. I think a new hiring will be made before 2009.
If you want defense go with Van Gundy. If you want offense go with Jordan. Johnson makes players angry from what I hear.
He's definitely a possibility in the summer. Better than any other coach on the market. And Milano suck, I don't see why he would go there other than the fact that he's Italian and they're Italian. That's more of a towards-the-end-of-his-career move.
Ettore Messina's name has been popping up for the past 2 years. I honestly haven't been able to watch him enough to really say whether I'd prefer hiring him or not. However, given how his recent gambles have backfired it'd be a ballsy move on BC's part. I like Eddie Jordan a lot, and I think he's probably the best coach on the market right now that wouldn't need a fundamental change in the way the roster's built. speeds, what makes you think Triano won't be the interim for the entire season? I wouldn't mind either way, because I'd like for this team to move past the Smitch era as quickly as possible.
Hell If Triano is successful here and proves to be an NBA caliber coach, signs would say Steve Nash as a back-up PG is a close to lock in a few years IMO Then again, Jose and Nash can't defend but it's worth bringing up
Who knows, maybe we'll have a consistent coaching philosophy for once under Triano? I think we'll see a bit of a spark from the team. Mitchell's shitty coaching aside, I'm sure every one of those guys realizes that they're halfassed effort against the Nuggets last night was the nail in his coffin. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that Triano's a long-term solution. I think we should all be analyzing the technical aspects of the game for the next few weeks to get a handle of how good a coach he actually is. I know shookems been high on him, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I can't claim insider knowledge or purport to know what the team thinks of Triano, but keeping Triano is essentially declaring this season a wash. I don't feel the team really looks to Triano to be a leader so much as a teacher--which is fine for an assistant coach but not for an NBA head coach. Frankly, Triano has been a hanger-on with this franchise through three coaching regimes. He has been forced to be a part of the coaching staff for the Raps for the last seven years at the behest of MLSE and their desire to grow Canada Basketball. That isn't the resume of someone ready to lead an NBA franchise into the playoffs. There is a lot of speaking in codes that I'm sure you're all aware goes on in pro sports. If Colangelo had come out and said "Sam Mitchell will not be fired" last week, everyone would know that Mitchell was about to be fired. That's just the way things are said. By saying Triano will coach out the season, he's basically saying that they have someone else to take over the team but he'll give it until 2009 before they introduce the new guy--just out of respect to the departing coach. This is all IMHO.
Also, Triano is the only assistant who will make the transition between head coaches. English and Evans are not going to stick around, nor would the new coach want to have his assistants chosen for him. Triano can become a good transition with the old system and what the players are comfortable with and the new system. He can grease the coaching switch process.
I know a lot of raps fans say that they want English... I don't know anything about him but one thing for sure, I want JVG. This team's problem is D not O. JVG can really bring that in for us.
Agreed. JVG brings out the best defense from his players and has been known to turn matadors into at least serviceable defenders. With it you'll get a slow, grind it out offense and methodical play, not to mention him playing who he believes in, even if the player has gone 0-10 on the night. The way this team is playing right now has no identity besides that of a 3-point shooting team, so maybe a defensive tag won't be too bad. It will be a radical departure from what Colangelo envisions for this team though, so the chances of it happening aren't likely.
