Washington has announced plans to retire Brandon Roy's No. 3, just the second number jersey retired in program history, joining 1953 All-American center Bob Houbregs, whose No. 25 hangs on a banner from the Edmundson Pavilion rafters.

Roy, in his third year with the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, will be honored by the UW before the Jan. 22 Washington-USC basketball game, a Thursday night contest with an 8 p.m. tipoff.

I thought he was great at UW. I believe he took the Huskies to the Elite Eight where they lost a questionably officiated game to the eventual national champs. He stayed all 4 years too. He never put up insane stats just like now, but the dude is a winner. Look how far their program has regressed since he left.

Not to be out done, the Blazers will retire Brandon's number 3 in January. It will be a joint celebration with Damon Stoudamire and Cliff Robinson.

Not to mention they made the NCAA tournament for three straight years with Brandon, and haven't even sniffed a chance in it since he left.

That was a Sweet 16 game against UCONN.

I honestly think Roy was robbed of the Naismith award and Wooden award that year. Redick and Morrison were the media darlings while Roy was the darkhorse.

He was amazing and I prayed Portland would take him in the draft. When I heard Minnesota did I felt sick, but then we traded and now everything is good :pimp:

Yep, you're right. UConn actually didn't win the title that year either did they? They were the favorites, but they got upset later if I remember correctly.

    Hello darkness, my old friend
As much as I dislike Morrisson as a player, and never thought he'd be a great player at the NBA level, I think his win was very justified. He was a great collegiate that season. He deserved both awards, really, not just one.

I'm just glad Portland got Aldridge and Roy.

    He didn't win either award.

Roy was averaging 20.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists while shooting 508% shooting

    He also deserved it.

Really? Okay. I thought Morrison and Redick split the Naismith and Wooden awards.

Well, I think Morrison was more dominant, as he put up 28.1 PPG / 5.5 RPG / 1.8 APG. Roy averaged a little more than 2 more assists per game, but Morrison scored almost 8 points more per game.

In any case, I'm no big Morrison booster. I'll just say that it would have been no injustice, to me, if Morrison had won the awards. I wouldn't have considered Roy robbed.

I like overall stats better, Roy was just as dominant(on both sides of the ball) and he shot better. Still those awards always usually only look at one stat - PPG. And Roy also averaged about 6 minutes less than Morrison.

What does Roy's skin color have to do with not winning the award?

Broy might not have recieved either award but he was chosen as 1st team all-american, which means he was the best at his position.

    EDIT: I forgot to say...go huskies! :)
