Committing money to Stephen Jackson and Don Nelson, along with bringing unmovable contracts to the team. From a pure financial stand point, this doesn't make sense. Why not free up the cap space for better options down the road.
Wow Kensaku, you have a knack for running into warriors! If you ran over him, would that free up cap space? Nah I love Jax. He's the man. Alley Oop, I'm totally happy with not re-signing Baron Davis. I'm completely unhappy with how they wasted the pick for Marcus Williams. I thought the Warriors knew what they were doing, but they didn't, which scares me. If Ellis wants out because of the management, I'm pissed. I'm pissed at Ellis, but management doesn't have the upper hand over star talent to be over-strict. I've been a fan of Sjax and Mags for a while, so I'm not really caring about spending money on them. I just hope they can play and stay healthy. The main issue in my mind has always been our point guard play and our big man play. If we lose guys that we draft that can fill those positions or we fail to sign a free agent that actually wants to play for us at the 1, 4, or 5, I'll be pissed. Nelson is not a big man coach, but we need to develop good big men and playmakers and shooters to get things rolling. The most important positions on this team just can't be found which absolutely sucks! ...a team full of combo guards and swingmen just can't win it especially with the way Nelson plays this team defensively and in halfcourt. We need playmakers, rebounders, inside scorers, and guys who can play defense. If the coach can't make a team that is capable of doing those things, I think he needs to be canned. The other stink never finding the right coach, is I don't think the Warriors will attract any good free agents either. They're the toilet bowl of the nba when it comes to free agency. Plus, like JV mentioned, the management doesn't know what they're f-ing doing so how can they hire the right coach and the right gm to get the right players. They never have! That's why they kept hiring jackasses and just when things get good they start trying to muck up the works. I'm happy with the Warriors roster, I'm just not happy with the minutes being given to impact big men who can alter shots, rebound, and score at 50%. The team gets a little trigger happy when you got guys like Crawford, Buike, Jax, Mags, Morrow, all playing at the same time. I think all those guys are turnover prone and half are extremely streaky from outside. We're better off with using a guy that commands less shots to run the offense, get the ball in the hands of Biedrins or Wright with Turiaf to play center or power forward with either of those two. Then we use Mags/Buike/Jax at SF, with Crawford/Belinelli/Sjax at shooting guard. Play Watson and f-ing Marcus Williams and call it the best we can do. Williams doesn't even have to shoot. Just drive the damn ball and look for people or call for a screen and hit one from 20 feet.
Me too. I've said that all along. The problem with this is the fact that Rowell seems to have made a "WIN NOW" movement by signing Maggette, extending Jax and taking Crawford's contract on. And if he wanted to do that, he should have kept Baron and not signed Maggette. Letting go of Baron was perfect to rebuild and let the young guys develop. However, instead of doing that, Rowell turns around and gives Maggette 50+ mils, thus relegating Bellinelli to the bench. So, he made a poor decision, when it comes to "win now," in choosing Maggette over Baron. He should have saved the cash (and cap room) and let the young guys play. But that's obvious.
Totally agree. Don't forget, Azubuike was signed as well, thus relegating Bellinelli even more...probably off the bench and to another team. I feel the Azubuike signing, as much as I love him, was not a step with the future in mind, but more of a glue to keep the team competitive NOW.
Nope. I disagree with CR2 and Alley Oop about not re-signing Baron. I didn't want to extend Baron to a max deal, but for three years making it a total of four was very reasonable. He was our best player and he got us to the playoffs two years ago and we just missed making it last year. Sure, Baron was a pain in the ass at times, but I'm looking for results. Compare that with what we have now. We're just playing for the future and I don't see a very good one because even though we have the young players, we don't have front office management who appears to know what they are doing, i.e. Rowell, Nelson, and Riley. Nelson still doesn't like to play the rooks/sophs or big men. The dude is archaic.
Well, in hindsight, sure, but it made sense not to sign Baron to a long-term contract. He wasn't the right type of player to develop along side Wright and/or Randolph. It was HIS team and as long as he would be here, it would always be his team. How do you develop young guys when you have that type of player. Even though he's a PG and the best one we've probably ever had, he's still not a "true PG." Now, that being said, yes, I think we'd be better off this season if Baron didn't opt out. For me, results would mean getting PT for Wright, Randolph, and Bellinelli...even Marcus Williams. We need to see if we can lay a foundation for a future by playing them consistently.
I don't see how Davis' presence will hinder Wright and Randolph's developments. If the best players think it's his team and that prevent young player's development, teams like Cavs, Heat, Lakers, Suns, or pretty much any team with superstar should not develop any young talent. But, that's really not the case, and players like Biedrins developed very well with Davis. And, it's scary to think that players like Wright and Randolph think this team is theirs at this point. They will not be ready at least in 3 years. To me, not having a Davis will actually hinder their development, because losing environment is usually toxic for young players. There are tons of cases, where raw and talented high picks lose their confidences or pick up bad habits, because they are in a losing environment (ex: Sprewell, Smith), and volatile character like Randolph really needs to be in a good environment. At least, Davis would have given them tons of easy buckets and made them poor man's Tyson Chandler, since Chandler pretty much owe everything to Paul and his passing. Should we extend Davis with 13 mils/3 years? I would. The deal was reasonable, and length was bit long, but it's not horrible. Despite all flaws, Davis is a game changer, made this club win, and he is a very good fit for Warriors and Nelson system. Sure, it's highly unlikely that we would have won a championship with Davis, and at best, this club would follow Suns and Mavs' path. If that's the reason why we let Davis go, than I would have been fine. And, 2010 FA would have been a great start. Instead, he started with Maggette and his 50 mils/5 years, same age, same injury prone, 3 mils cheaper, and far less impact. It really rivals Todd Fuller moment (Oops, Dampier is gone and we need to draft a center). OK, one bad mistake. But, we can still enter 2010 FA. Then, Rowell had to extend Jackson for some reason. It's already questionable whether Jackson will worth 10 mils when he is 33 to 35 years old. But, it's another "I don't have a freaking clue about the future, and I am giving Jackson an extension, because it looks good now and I am darn scared of Jackson being angry at me" moment. I don't mind Crawford deal too much, because we are already screwed, so no point keeping Harrington. Rowell had choice one and two. One is "Win now" and Two is "Build for the future". Instead, Rowell chose 1.5, and we are financially screwed for 2013. It will take another Walsh and Detroit-Indiana brawl to get out of this mess, and I don't know Rowell has that type of connection or ability...
Kwan, you're writing a lot of definitive things with absolutely no support. Randolph is a volatile player? Since when? He seems pretty calm and collected to me. Same as Wright. I think they just want their opportunity, regardless of Baron or not. I don't think they're in a "bad" environment at all. The Warriors are struggling but I think all the players get along just fine and none of the players have underminded Nellie whatsoever. I agree that they shouldn't be thinking this is their team and they don't think that and I never said that. But their potential, on paper, is high. I see Randolph's potential higher than Baron's. That's me being optimistic. So with that optimism, I'm not that sad that Baron is gone. Baron is a diva. He needs to be the star of the team. I think we've seen Baron's ceiling and it got us to the 2nd round of the playoffs. I don't think it would have taken us higher. It was time to move on...one year prematurely, but that was purely Baron's decision. Baron chose to leave for a better financial deal. I don't blame him, but that's not the type of guy you want around your young guys. Baron's bad tendencies, as much as I love him, is also a "bad" environment for young players...if you want to make that kind of argument. I also don't understand your Sprewell reference. He choked PJ Carlismo because PJ is a prick. Not because the Warriors were losing. Joe Smith? He was a bust from the very first time he stepped on the court...not lack of confidence. I'm sick of talking about WHAT IF BARON WAS HERE. It's a moot point. The fact is, HE'S NOT HERE AND NEVER WILL BE.
We need to keep talking about it until Cohan and Rowell are gone. They made the call and WE get stuck paying higher prices for a garbage product!
Do I have to come up with footnote, video clips or article to back up everything I said? From what I saw from summer league games and from scouting reports, Randolph needed to grow bit more especially when he is frustrated, and as far as I know, he racked up quite few technical fouls during the summer league. It may be perfectly natural for 19 years old kid to have maturity problem. But, he needs to be in a good environment to develop as a player and a person. And, losing environment doesn't necessary provide a good condition for young players. That's what I am worrying about. Smith was a pretty good banger in his rookie season. But, once he tasted 'other' NBA life, he turned into a jump shooting PF. If he were in better team, his career might have been significantly different. And, are you supporting everything you said? Exactly how did you support your idea that for some reason Davis is not the right type of player for Randolph or Wright? The fact is that we are in a message board, and we all say whatever we want to say, and don't have enough time or resource to back up our arguments like professional journals. And, just because I didn't provide detailed support, does that mean it's completely invalid? Do you remember when I said this team is 35 winning club at best? Hate Rowell with a passion? And, why Jackson's extension would be an absolute disaster? And what happened in less than couple months? If you don't like what I or other people say, argue. And, if you don't want/have time/ or can't, don't argue. There is no scoring card or performance review for those. And, if you don't like to hear about Davis... well, that's too bad, because you will hear about that for a quite some time. Rowell, who made Davis decision, is still in charge and relevent to us. And he already made series of financial mistakes including Davis one. Now, this team is not winning AND we are financially in trouble for next 5 years. When people will talk about Rowell, they will naturally bring up Davis, and it will be continued till Rowell is gone. I mean, can you argue Twerdzik without Fuller, Thomas without Marbury or Bush without current financial disaster? And, if we are winning or filled the void Davis left, maybe we will not talk about him anymore. But, the fact is that we are losing, can't score during 4th quarter, and simply need a PG just like Davis. And, all those problem could have solved if Rowell gave Davis an extension. Yeah, you can ignore an elephant in this room. But, don't expect others to do the same. At least not for a while...
I thought getting Magettee would add to the chemistry and work ethic of this team. For some reason, I thought he would be a good leader and role model in the weight room and on the hardwood. Maybe it was his mild-mannered interviews and modest sense of respect for the game and his coaches that he expressed during post-trade interviews? Well, I don't know about the weight room, but as far as on-the-court play, nothing could be further from the truth. Or maybe it's just his game? Maybe it's just his nature to play no defense and to try to go 1-on-1 every time he touches the ball? Either way, it's terrible for development, terrible for team play, terrible for chemistry and terrible for (fill in the blank here)... Maybe we could trade Maggette for Baron? At this point, I'd do that deal....
Sorry, Kwan...that's just mean LOL. I wasn't trying to attack you. Particularly, I was just not feeling what you were saying about Randolph, losing environment, and Sprewell. Like I said, just because a team is losing doesn't make it a bad environment. Winning cures all, sure, but if Randolph is a going to be a good to very good to star type player, then losing shouldn't affect too much on what type of player he becomes. He should be able to overcome it and eventually be a catalyst in turning losing around. I think Kevin Durant is a very good player and he will probably be a star, if not already, but his team sucks. So what does that say? Okay okay with the Baron Davis talk. I'm not saying you can't talk about it and I KNOW we'll be hearing about it probably forever. But it's so easy to just point to him leaving. I like to talk about potential solutions to problems, not just keeping pointing to a problem that's passed. Again, sorry Kwan if I've offended you because I just wanted a little more elaboration on your claims. I get what you're saying. I'm not going to argue about arguing with you, so please, don't get all worked up about it. I actually appreciate what you contribute to the board. Don't get all hot and bothered because I criticized your opinions. I would appreciate it if you would focus more on elaborating what you meant rather than criticizing me criticizing you. Peace
No worries man. So, last night I was looking at old Warrior videos on YouTube. That's probably one of the most depressing things a Warrior fan can do. The 06/07 season was pretty damn special, even though we only made it to the 2nd round. There were just so many "moments" that make it so memorable. God, I sound pathetic.
