This is my new nickname for Mags. I don't think he's a bad player, and last night his rebounding and defense looked a little better than the atrocious stuff I've been seeing from him. Nonetheless, when I watch him play, it becomes obvious to me that this was a bad signing for Golden State. I regret this move. Regrette is just a stat-man. That's it, IMO. He never made hi teammates on the Clippers better, as far as I remember, and he's certainly not doing that here. He's a black hole on offense. He's shooting 9-49 from three yet continues to fire away like he's Jordan. When the ball goes to him, everything comes to a halt as he stands and decides which type of shot he's going to take next. There seems to be no flow, no connection to his teammates. I'm not saying he's a bad player. But I just don't see him ever being an important part of a playoff team. Yet, this is what GS is paying him to do with the fat $$ contract. I would much rather see Morrow and Bellinelli get more of a chance. It's time for Regrette to pack his bags.
LOL! Great name! I would say last night's game was his best yet. Simply put, he didn't chuck up 3's and he didn't settle for the jump shot (for the most part). He looked for his teammates, albeit hesitantly, and he drove with his head only half-way down. On a couple occasions, he actually passed the ball on a drive!!! That being said, I agree. I don't think I've ever seen a highlight of Maggette hitting a meaningful shot (e.g. game tying or game winning) at a meaningful time. At this point, I view him as a glorified 6th man. I think the only teams that will take him, if any, are contending teams that need that extra scoring option (i.e. 3rd or 4th option). Even then, given his contract, we're probably going to absorb a big contract too. But, as long as it gives minutes to other players such as Morrow, Belli, or Azubuike, then I'm for it.
He did do some chucking last night, BTW. One of them was either a three or right on the line and it barely hit the rim...almost another Maggette patented airball. There was also a turnaround fadaway clanker that I remember. I agree it was far from his worst game, but he still ballhogged and made some bad decisions. As AO says, even when he's hitting his shots he tends to hurt the team play because he takes the rest of his teammates out of the game. Once the ball gets to him, it's a 1 on 5 iso play almost every time.
That is funny. I was going to say that you'd need to add something with Air Ball to his nickname because he shoots probably more of those than anyother NBA player I've seen. In the Knicks game he had 3 and I remember last night he had one. Just horrible. He is kind of like the SG version of Danny Fortson. Though maybe he is not really that bad of a locker-room guy... But definitely a stats guy first, and winning later or never. I think he could be a good player on another team, coming off the bench. But he's not a center-piece guy. He'd be good coming off the bench for a team like Boston or perhaps even the Cavs. I do like the way he's been getting the Warriors to the FT line. But for his contract, at that level this deal had regret written all over it - especially when the team needed a PG and/or another big before another wing player.
LOL great nickname. Maggette is too much of a me me player. Statistically he looks like a good player, but when he catches the ball he literally looks down and goes to the basket. I'm not saying he should be averaging 20 assists per game, but it's almost like he refuses to get his team mates involved.
Yeah, okay, I take back the part of him chucking, but he didn't do it as much as other games. Or maybe he did but it was masked by the fact that he did some other things a little better.
It's kind of interesting how Nelson says that Maggette is having trouble playing the 4. It's kind of an interesting interview in general. Check out the Dec. 4 practice interview, it is on the Warriors homepage in the media central. He likes the young guys who are developing like Morrow and Kurz...
Last night in SA for once I saw Nelson actually get in Magette's face about something. He was in full on I don't give a rat's ass jack mode and for once was getting called out on it. On one play he took a 3 pointer (19%, missed) with a wide open Morrow (leads NBA in 3P%) just 10' and one pass away. Smart teams like the Spurs play the averages, dumb teams like the Warriors naïvely think they can beat the odds with crap like that. Of course the shaking-head and f-you smile he returned to Nelson said I don't give a rat's ass about you, either, Nelson. It'd be nice to see that kind of dressing down a couple times a game to corrct his mistakes instead of a couple times a season. The few weeks following Dec. 15 should be interesting because I think even Nellie is getting tired of this guy's act.
Or maybe the Warriors are really trying to move Maggette, where benching him will not help his value at all, so maybe Nelson sees an incentive not to bench him and make a big deal over it. I guess we will see what goes on here. I remember in the Miami game Nelson got mad at Corey because there was a timeout and Maggette was talking with the ref and staying away from the team huddle. Nelson had to scream Corey's name like two or three times to get him away from the ref. I think he's a bit frustrated with the guy too.
Corey Maggette is a douche. What's funny is that, if the trade thing is true, the Warriors were all about their big splash free agent just a few months back, and now they're trying to move him...? That's the quickest change of vision I've seen in a franchise in a while. Why did they sign him in the first place?
From Peter Vecsey's column in the NY Post: On that alarming note, Bob Hellman, a staunch Paper Clips supporter, is amused to read the Warriors reportedly realize Corey Maggette is just interested in leading the team in shot attempts. "Don't the Warriors play the Clippers four times a season? Don't teams have access to game footage? Aren't scouts paid to be discriminate? Anybody who's seen Maggette's knows three things: No D, no assists, no good. Honestly, teams interested in acquiring players could save a lot of time, money and aggravation by simply contacting season ticket holders for unadulterated info." I can honestly say he always just seemed like a gunner to me. Never looked like a team player.
What has the sacred game of basketball become? A pile of dog shit. Good Millions of dollars does not equal good basketball. It's sad what the game has become. You'd think people wouldn't forget that. Wouldn't forget the roots. No amount of money could ever make me want to play the game any other way. In the end, you can't keep the cash. But you can keep the spirit of the game...forever. C'Mon Maggette. Didn't you play on the playground? Don't you know what it feels like to have teammates who love to play with you? Are eager to play with you? Make your teammates proud, dude... Forget it... I'm wasting my breath...
This team could be good if they just had a playmaker, another big to put next to Biedrins, and all 5 guys trying harder on D. Having a coach that makes these guys settle down on offense is a big plus too. We need set plays. Not guys jacking up shots whenever they feel like it. Mags is a good finisher and excellent midrange guy, but there needs to be a guy who can actually run this team.
Yeah, but we need a whole team of willing passers. It's like if you have even one black hole, the ball movement will always stop there. You look at San Antonio, they will make 10 passes just to get Matt Bonner an open look for pete's sake, we have Morrow sitting out there and no one will get him the ball for an in-rhythm shot. I'm not sure I've seen the Warriors make more than 4 passes on one play more than a few times this year. Again, they are just too impatient and undisciplined and until Nellie starts demanding some accountability forr that, it's not going to change. I am glad people finally seem to be getting fed up with Maggette's selfishness. Nellie chewed him out, Crawford was clearly disgusted with him, and you even have KG calling him out on it now.
Solid points, HiRez. Especially about Bonner -- it's so true. Maggette will never be able to do that -- he just doesn't seem capable.
