I sacked up and bought my first bottle last week, and enjoy sipping scotch much more than tasting wine or gulping down jack-n'-cokes. I got a Laphroig 10yr., and was scared when I first opened it b/c it smelled like medicine. But after 30 minutes of "opening up", it actually tasted really, really good. Anyone know where I can get sample bottles of other scotches, so I'm not dropping 50 bucks on something I may hate? And any recommendations? Should I stay with other Islays for now, or switch it up? And what food would you have around if you were going to have a scotch-tasting fiesta?
My favorite scotch is the glenlivet 12 year, on the rocks. It's a bit pricey, but nothing is better at the end of dinner.
Laphroig's good, but you sort of started out with one extreme. If you like Islays (like I do) then, sure, try lots of other Islays. Most people seem to prefer something less peaty. I've never met a single malt I wasn't happy to drink a whole bottle of, so I haven't checked for airline bottles. Maybe you could get tasters at a bar, too, never tried that either. Damn, I think I'll go pour myself a snort now. barfo
Exactly what I was going to say about the Laphroig myself, heckuva single malt to start on. I too am an Islay lover, my preference is for Lagavulin. To the OP, add a small amount of water to the scotch to fully enjoy. I prefer 2-4 small ice cubes (filtered water) for this.
Not yet, but in a few years I will probably be a scotch drinker. I'm in that phase of having better whisky like woodford and makers but still mixing with coke and ginger ale. I was going to go to a scotch class a while back...sponsored by Johnnie Walker...kind of regretting not going now.
I'm a big fan of Whiskey and have always wanted to try some single malt scotch. A guy at work said I should try (stuff thats not gonna break the bank): Glenfiddich 15 yr Balvenie 15 yr
