The Yankees' new rotation is starting to take shape as they are also in serious negotiations with free-agent Derek Lowe. An agreement with Lowe appears likely to be finalized in coming days, as well. The sides were discussing a contract for four years and about $66 million late Tuesday. Jesus. 4/66 for Derek friggin' Lowe? He's going to get raped in the AL East. I wouldn't sign him for 12 million per, let alone, 16.
... wtg Cashman. He's better off offering that 66 million to Manny over 3 years to DH. Manny would have a much bigger impact than Lowe. -Petey
"One source said reports that the Yankees are close to signing Lowe to a four-year deal are "incorrect." The Red Sox are also focused heavily on Lowe, and they're not going to just sit around the slot parlors all day and let their big pitching target waltz into New York. So add one more chapter to the never-ending Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. "http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove08/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=3759895 God, please let him be right. Go Sox, go!
"3:14pm: Rosenthal says the Yankees' talks with Lowe are progressing, but reports that they're close are overblown. He adds that the Yanks are also in active discussions with A.J. Burnett, and, surprisingly, Andy Pettitte."
I'm not overly fond of Lowe. As others have mentioned, he'll get pounded in the AL East. Plus, I'd much rather have Burnett or Sheets or Perez.
He and Wang would be very similar. If we are signing pitchers with similar styles, go with power pitchers (Sheets and Burnett). -Petey
