Then what are we getting into with the definition of life? A carrot doesn't have a heart beat, but it's a living organism.
They may not go in with the intent of getting pregnant, but they give their consent to getting pregnant when they have sex.
The argument that a fetus is not living so it's okay to terminate it is bunk, because it clearly is living.
We would need to come with a long term plan to eliminate abortion completely, including in rape cases, by increasing adoption by reforming the system and making improvements in the technology of artificial wombs.
We can quantify what we mean by life though. The moment of conception does signal the creation of a living thing; an organism. But that doesn't mean its a human life. It lacks the cognition, awareness, consciousness, etc. that are fundamental characteristics of human beings. Like speeds said, its more like life with the potential to become human life. I think you have to try to recognize both facts (that it is life, but not human life) when approaching abortion. There's nothing wrong with prioritizing the mother's condition over that of the fetus, because one is a human being with all the characteristics that are implied when we speak of human rights. We have to recognize the negative impact this can have on a female. Nevertheless, we can't trivialize the importance of that potential human life. That's why I support the right to abortion while opposing the haphazard, lackadaisical attitude that many hold towards it. We really need to emphasize the seriousness of the decision and eliminate this perception that abortion is just another type of "morning-after pill." I don't know how you'd legislate that though. I'm not even sure how you'd draw the line between serious and lackadaisical attitudes towards abortions either.
I heard my daughter's heartbeat at 8 or 10 weeks and at 20 weeks was able to count her fingers and watch her move on the ultrasound. The fetus has a heartbeat and is very much alive. I'm personally very much agianst abortion but I don't think it's the government's place to decide for everyone.
I was under the assumption the heart didn't start beating until the baby had been delivered, at which point it magically becomes a baby instead of a fetus.
You may be thinking of breathing (I'm not sure) but I am 100% certain she did have a heart beat. It's pretty crazy hearing it. When she was further along, you could even hear her heartbeat speed up when my wife or I talked.
"proof" by analogy isn't much in the way of proof, but ... if you mix them altogether and don't bake it, it's still a pizza. Without the analogy, it's good for the sperm and egg (if they mix, it's a human). You don't have cognition, awareness, consciousness, etc., when you're asleep, or in a coma, or brain damaged. Or before the age of 2 weeks, probably
A human can be cloned from a flake of my skin or a piece of my hair. He would be my duplicate, but still a human. Uniqueness is not required. A fertilized egg is just ingredients for a person.
As I said. They may not going into sex with the intent of getting pregnant, but they give their consent to getting pregnant when they agree to have sex.
Not really. If people are using birth control methods they are not giving their consent to getting pregnant.
