http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/56020/20081216/cavs_discussing_marion_deal_with_miami/ Wally and Varejao for Marion?! If the Cavs get this trade... wow. This will make them a LOT better IMO. Yes, Marion is playing terrible this year, but put ANYONE next to LeBron and they will play better. Good deal for the Cavs IMO.
Verejou has been playing out of his mind this year. He is really doing well next to LeBron, and has great chemistry w/ the team. This is a risk for the Cavs, imo. They have a great thing going. But bringing in Marion would be nice. But he is an expiring, so it may be just a rent-a-player. I still think i'd do it if I was the Cavs. It hleps Miami also. It lets Beasley go to SF, Haslem at PF and then Verejou at C along w/ CHalmers and Wade. They will get better ones James Jones gets back also. I think its agood trade for both teams. Wally is an expiring.
That's a terrible trade for the Heat. Marion and Wally are both expiring contracts, so that's a wash, but all they get back in terms of their future is Varejao. I'd do Marion for Raef, Sergio and Frye. We add some needed toughness and defense in that deal.
Yeah this would make Miami really good I think!!! Anderson could be their Center they been needing since Shaq. How would they run? Chalmers Wade\Cook *Beasley\Wally\Jones Haslem\*Beasley Anderson Not bad! The Cavs look like... Williams\Gibson West\Pavlavic LeBron Marion\Wallace Big Z yeah I agree with MrJay. This is a good trade for both teams.
That would be highway robbery by the Cavs and I'm 100% sure that would mean Wade will leave the team in '10.
Not really. Anderson is MONEY this year and would fit in much better then Marion on the Heat. Wally gives them another good shooter to create space for Beasley and Wade. Wade aint going no where.
Trading Marion or not makes no difference, imo. He won't be there past this year, imo. I don't think it will effect Wade. I also think that this gives them a decent sized front court, which will really help them, imo. More than people think. The Cavs get the best player in the deal, so from their standpoint, though Anderson is a pimp, you do it. They don't know if they would be able to keep Anderson after his contract is up anyway (remember that hold out).
Marion certainly is the biggest name in the hypothetical, but the stats seem to disagree with your conclusion of who is the best player. On a per minute basis this season, AV scores more points and gets more rebounds. He's very close on steals and blocks as well. He shoots a much higher percentage is 4" taller and over 4 years younger. That Varejao is trending up and while Marion is going down (in a contract year) also would give me reason to question why the Cavs would do this. SM excelled in a wide open system where he could push the pace and utilize his quickness... Cleveland walks the ball up. Lastly it's not next off-season that they'll need the capspace, its 2010. As well as the Cavs are playing, I doubt they're going to upset their apple cart unless there is a much more clearcut upgrade available. STOMP
IF Marion still has "it", this could be this years Laker/Grizz Gasol/Garbage trade. Marion is only 30, but he hasn't looked like the 21/11 guy from 2006 since . . . 2006. Let's face it, his numbers were inflated by the Suns tempo and the fact that they had no Center to grab boards. It's more than the numbers though. I've only seen him a half dozen times or so in the last couple of years and he looks less explosive than the high flying "Matrix" we're used to seeing. Could be injuries, could be motivation, could be wear/tear. If he still has it, and at 30 it's quite possible, than this is a steal for the Cavs. They get a versatile guy who can take pressure off Labron defensively. Plus, he can score . . . we've all seen him score 25 w/o so much as a single played called for him. He's not you're typical 15-20 ppg guy who complains when he doesn't get his shots. I think it's a great trade for the Cavs. It makes them a little thin at PF behind Wallace, but maybe they like Hickson. I liked his game at NC State. Varejao is a decent player, but Marion is all star caliber. At least he was - hard to believe at 30 he's slowing down already. Plus, think of this guys . . . if you're the Cavs you've got to be thinking the road to the finals goes through Boston. With Allen and Pierce in Boston, you need perimeter defense and you'd like for Labron not to have to guard either of those guys for 40 minutes. I think this would be a no brainer for the Cavs.
Yeah, it has to do with how you assess Marion. Wally and Marion are both expirings, and they don't know if they will be able to hold onto Anderson after his contract is up as well. I also don't know how he would perform in a system like the one Cleveland runs.
Anderson Varejao isn't going to set the world on fire if he goes to Miami. He's a hustle guy now that get s a lot of buckets around the hoop since LeBron commands so much attention. That said, Marion isn't going to help them that much I have a feeling. His shot has been pretty off this season, although his rebounding is still very good.
I was thinking that he would be more of a SF. PG Mo Williams SG Labron SF Marion PF Wallace C Ilguaskas
It's actually not that great. The Heat obviously want Varejao. They don't have a good center and Varejao could easily start. Marion only has one year left on his contract, and there's really no guarantee that he will resign in Miami, nor any guarantee that Miami still wants him. Marion is getting older and his play has been getting worse. I don't really know if I would do this if I were the Cavs. Obviously, title hopes go up THIS year, but that's basically it.
His team-mates might miss him, but the Cavs' front office seems to consider him a royal pain-in-the-pipes. They could see this as a "sell high" situation on a player they don't plan on having around long-term anyway.
