The early UFC was designed exactly to showcase what you're talking about--to pit the various martial arts styles (sumo, boxing, karate, BJJ, etc.) against each other to prove that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the best. Its arguable that Royce's mastery of BJJ far exceeded the ability of the other fighters in their respective sports, however, but you're never going to have a perfect situation. There are a lot of examples of guys who have come into MMA with one dominant skillset but everyone has to evolve.

They've also revealed that they kinda made up the credentials of a lot of fighters in the early UFC's who were mostly tough man fighters and local martial artists and not top practioners of their art like Royce was. It was kind of a con-job by the producers and the Gracies.

The Sport has evolved that few fighters are only good at one aspect of the sport. Some are world champs in one area, but they're training in the other aspects to be successful.

Take Vinny for example, 4 time BJJ champ, but he tried to stand with Bader and Bader's stand up is better and he won.

This doesn't look very effective, but what do I know about it. ;)

Thats a crazy ass move speeds. I am amazed by how he jumps, then uses one leg to leverage himself while he turns over in the air.

On a somewhat related note, Japanese Judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii wants to fight for the UFC. Traditionally Judo practitioners are at a marked disadvantage due to the lack of a gi in modern MMA. Take away their handles and they get confused, punch them in the head and they panic. But there is a school of thought that any athlete determined and talented enough to reach the highest levels--whether it be D1 wreslting champions or Olympians in various combat styles--probably has what it takes to adapt to MMA.

Yea, generally wrestling would be considered probably the best base, but part of that is generally the best wrestlers have phenominal conditioning. I mean looking at Koscheck, Hughes, Sherk, Bader, Couture, Coleman, Henderson, Tito, Lesnar, GSP (not a collegiate wrestler but his primary focus is wrestling) etc.

Wrestling allows the fighter to dictate where the fight will be whether standing or on the ground.
Not neccesarily, Vinny vs. Bader turned out that way, and Vinny is a decorated BJJ guy, and Bader chose to keep it standing. Effrain beat Nover and he controlled the match being a wrestler and being able to have the dominant position. Nover is more well rounded though in muay thai and BJJ.

Hughes beat an out of prime Royce Gracie. Couture beat Gonzaga.

Hughes is 1-1 against BJ Penn. However Hughes actually has some BJJ, and Penn has worked on his stand up.

Frank Mir (BJJ guy) recently beat a NCAA div 1 HW champ wrestler in Brock Lesnar.

However these days, most fighters have trained some in more than one martial art and try to become well rounded.
