I think the cake is fine. We can add one or two impact players in the offseason. Roy looks stellar. Aldridge is improving. The big man will take some time. Rudy looks like a keeper. Outlaw is a bargain at our contract price. Webster will also be a bargain. It's a nice core. We have a nice record. If the team were mine, I would add Artest and Bibby in the offseason and the rotation would look something like this: Bibby/Sergio/Bayless Roy/ Rudy Artest/Webster Aldridge/Outlaw Oden/Pryzbilla
well the lakers had been in talks with MEM for a year before the deal went down...and he is just one piece, it wasnt a drastic change of the roster besides for one player
That's kind of what I'm saying, though. Kupchak turned "spare parts" into a great pickup for you guys at a perceived weakness for your team that basically keyed your run to the Finals. Without that move, are you even making the 2nd round? I'm just waiting/hoping for KP to make a similar deal, to trade our "spare parts" (which imo are better than the ones at Kupchak's disposal last year) into a good, veteran pickup at a position of weakness for us. It would be the difference between not making the 2nd round and going relatively deep. Do you think that "what we need" can't be seen right now? That we need to "play out the season" to prove that we're not seeing a 30-game aberration? You don't think that if the amateur-hour coaches like MM or wannabe GMs like me can pick up what we need, KP can't?
Thus far the team is exceeding the expectation that all but a very few of us posted prior to the first tip off. Most posters are not starting threads/making posts complaining about the state of things. A few are though which says plenty about those individuals because of course their pre-season expectations are being exceeded as well... yet whine they must. It's my feel on things here that most are reasonably happy right about now and aren't starting inflammatory threads or participating in them. The chicken little threads get the most run going multi-pages but quite a bit of that run is posters telling others to back away from the ledge. I find most of the complainers to be sad comedy STOMP
it takes two to tangle. I'm sure KP will be willing to listen to teams willing to part with their top player(s). A deal like the Gasol one may not happen, but if it does it will likely go down right around the trade deadline. Teams will probably wait until the last moment possible to run up the white flag in front of their fanbase. STOMP
I'm with you, STOMP...I actually think it would be imprudent to trade Outlaw today without getting a good SF in return, or trading for Hinrich while he's injured. But my point was that I think a "quick fix" might be just what the team needs to rip off a L*ker-type run.
The commonly held view has always been that it's unlikely the club transforms into a contender this year without a major trade. But I'm fine with not making a deal this season if the right one doesn't come along because they do have other great options to rework the roster with and of course time is on the side of their talent. Unlike a few here, it's not championship or for my Blazer fandom. I like how the team is doing and am very optimistic about their future. The SF and PG spots are not settled yet. I think they've some more turning over to do as I project the 2008 rookies to emerge as the best players of the 3 at their respective spots. Or of course they could trade for starters at those spots and they are well positioned for doing just that this offseason with the potential capspace to make a lopsided trade (salary-wise) and the prospects to entice So I see lots of options, a very bright future, and little reason to make a deal just to shake things up. The only reason they should make a deal mid-season this year is if it is clearly in their best interest now and into the future. Certainly a Gasol like trade would fall into this category. STOMP
Right on, DaRizzle. It isn't about quick fixes. ALL teams have problems, yet we are 18-12 and ahead of expectations. I'm with the people that think we need to do some things to the roster still, but I don't think its panic time or time to morgage our future for a "quick, shorterm fix". I think a lot of what we need can be taken care of in the off-season. The one thing I think should be used now is Raef's contract... but if we do that, we will most likely take a nice contract back, that doesn't expire, so we won't have cap this off-season (or for the next 10)... i'm fine w/ this though if the right player comes along. I honestly don't see the right player yet. And Bayless sure isn't the answer to our problems. Though by the end of the year, I think we will be a better team with him playing a nice role rather than not. I also think that more than trying to consolidate or aquire a vet, that we need to focus on Greg Oden, because I believe we will go as far as he takes us, as I believe he is the wildcard.
