is anybody else out there old enough to remember, sometime back in the early 70s, when the nba used to have a one on one tournament...i don't remember the details now, but i have this vague recollection of their being a little bracket and everything, maybe 16 players in all were involved. i can't remember when they actually played the games though...or who participated.anybody help me out here? i'd love to have my memory jogged on this one. i remember it as being cool as hell to me to see these guys playing one on one with each other just the same way (sort of) that i did with my friends down at the park
Im only 16 but I study alont of old school NBA and I remember this.Wasnt it sponsered by Gillette ?I remember reading that the games were open which means a guard can play a center and all that good stuff. If I remember correctly the games were played during halftime of the game of the week? It lasted the whole season.the NBA needs to bring this back.
haha i wish they would but none of the players or coaches would agree to it b/c of the risk of injury, the only way they could get the players to agree to it would be if it actually meant something like added a win to ur record if u got 10+ wins or something like that, idk i just dont see it coming back but i wish it would.
ballaholic: i'm impressed. it'd be great for more young people like yourself to have an interest in history (and not just about basketball). and now that you mention, i remembered it as being during half-time of the game of the week too (of course this was before cable tv, when it was just one game per week on one of the networks) and you're right that it was sponsored by gillette and that it mixed positions up so that you could have, for example, Gervin vs. Jabbar. It's weird, though, that the teams let that happen back then. Because I'm sure dnuggs is right that the players assoc. or the coaches or someone would never go for it today.too bad. it was awesome. i can think of some match-ups i'd love to see (both among players playing the same position and across different positions), can't you? as i remember too, it wasn't like all-star game half-hearted showboating. these guys really were bringing it and trying to win.if anybody finds any sites that have more about this on the web, please post them because i'd love to relive some of those moments in more detail.
