He's already guarding the opposing teams best offensive player. Travis and Martell can only dream of having Nic's defensive instincts and smarts. Is it safe to say he's the SF of the future/present? As far as comparisons go, after watching him in the 30+ games he's played, he really looks like a more athletic Bruce Bowen. Of course, Nic brings a different dimension with his height, length, and athletic ability, but the skill sets are very comparable.
At the very least, he'll be a defensive stopper that can play 20-25 mpg due to us having wing players that deserve the rest of the minutes. I wouldn't mind him/Webster being our 1-2 punch down the line if they both continue to develop like I think they will.
Tayshuan Prince or Gerald Wallace. He looks great for a 19-20 year old. His defense already looks top-shelf and he's clearly a player with lots of tools, including intelligence. It's hard to guess where his ceiling is, but I think Prince and Wallace are reasonable expected values. I love the idea of the defense that Bayless and Batum could bring to the starting lineup in the future. And with Oden, who projects to be a top defensive big man, and Aldridge, who's a defensive asset...the team's defense could be a real strength in the future. If Roy is the team's worst defender, they'll be in good shape.
15 FT attempts in 34 games and a 17 mpg guy at this point. I like what he's bringing, but it isn't like he's a sure bet at SF if another slasher is what is needed.
I would absolutely say he is the SF for this team... RIGHT NOW! No need to wait. Solid backups in Martell and Travis when he plays 3.
I love what Batum has brought this season. He plays great individual and team defense, and has a pretty good jumper for a 19-, 20-year-old. He can only get better, and probably next for him is expanding his offensive game and become a slasher, creating his own shot and developing a pull-up jumper. This guy's got a great future if he can stick with it.
