Ah, my angle was to suggest that maybe Miles' comeback had the goal of getting money, rather than playing time. Not that I have any reason to believe that, it is just one possibility out of many.

If Miles was going to sue the Blazers for restricting his ability to make a living, the parties could agree that the the Blazers weren't restricting his ability to make a living. The agreement might take the form of some sort of payment to Miles. On the other hand, such settlement might be expressly prohibited by the CBA - I dunno.

It's not about money being paid. The Blazers are paying Miles' remaining salary regardless. It's about whether his salary counts against the Blazers' cap. So, it's about salary space, which does matter. Not nearly as much as columnists are trying to pretend...Portland can still open up the cap space for a max contract if they really want to.

But Portland's goal is likely not a max contract superstar anyway, but being able to sign one or more good young veterans.

I think this letter is just a reminder to the other 29 teams that the point of signing Miles to a contract is for him to play basketball, and not to dick over one of your fellow teams, whom you have to get along with.

Are there legitimate reasons for playing guys only 1 or 2 minutes a game? Sure there are, it happens virtually every game. Portland tends to give Channing Frye 3 or 4 minutes a game, which of course make us all call for a trade when he sits down after missing 3 shots and committing 2 fouls during that time, but we all know that Channing serves a purpose to give our more skilled players a breather. I see 10-day contracts as a function of filling empty spots on the bench when injuries deplete your cache of backup players. If a team with 14 healthy players signs Miles, and gives him play time ahead of that guaranteed contract 14th man, then that's a pretty clear dick move, and one that this e-mail intends to remind other teams that Portland doesn't like dick moves. If however, a team is down to 10 players able to suit for a game, then a 10-day contract for Miles has a much better and legitimate purpose behind it, and I can't imagine the Blazers would object to that.

Larry Miller is just reminding the rest of the NBA that they are in the business of playing basketball against each other, not committing corporate espionage.

    Holy fuck!!!!

That is awesome. Not sure yet if it is a good thing or not, but wow.

Can they really do that? And how could they possibly prove it was malicious?

Re: Blazers threaten the rest of the NBA

This is getting ridiculous. The real issue here is that the league has created this weird situation in which other teams can hold significant power over the Blazer's salary cap.

That's a problem because the CBA and the cap structure is set up to prevent such gamesmanship. By utterly failing to fix the situation, the league and I'd imagine the player's union has done Darius Miles (a union member) and one of its teams (the Blazers) massive disservice.

That being said, the Blazers are missing the boat and creating more problems in the way they're handling this. If I were Darius Miles' lawyer, I'd be preparing a letter of my own this morning, perhaps more. If I were another team, I'd be that much more irritated with the Blazers.

I get the feeling this isn't going to end well.

I really hope they thought long and hard on this one, and it wasn't Larry Miller being pissed off one morning.

My question is, why isn't the Blazers' beef against the NBA, itself? I mean, it was their doctors that finally agreed/concluded Miles was unfit to play.

    Right??

Seems to me like the players union should be on our side. Miles is getting his $$$ from the contract he signed with us even though he isnt playing for us anymore. So Miles's salary going back on our cap will hurt another player or two that they represent. The less $$ we have to spend, the less $$ available for us to spend on other players this offseason.
