Re: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

    Some notes on the event:

    - Former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich "Ace" Franklin takes on former PRIDE Middleweight & Light Heavyweight Champion Dan "Hendo" Henderson in a contender eliminator match. Win or lose, Franklin is staying at light heavyweight. With a win, Dan Henderson will likely stay at light heavyweight, and with a loss, he may return to middleweight. Both fighters have lost middleweight title fights to Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Franklin, who trains with Team Extreme, lost to Silva twice which prompted his move to light heavyweight. Henderson, a Team Quest fighter, lost to Silva once and has called it a fluke, and has campaigned for a rematch. The winner of the fight is expected to coach opposite Michael "The Count" Bisping for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter: U.S. vs. U.K.. Currently no fighters have been chosen for the final-32 participants for the show. The show is expected to debut in April following Ultimate Fight Night 18.

    - Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Mark "The Hammer" Coleman won via technical knockout when he last fought PRIDE 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix winner Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at PRIDE 31: Unbreakable in 2006. In the fight Rua fell back awkwardly on his arm and dislocated his elbow in the first round. The referee stopped the fight but Coleman wouldn't relinquish his attack, at one point throwing the referee aside to continue his assault on Rua, who had quit the fight. A brawl between Rua's Chute Boxe team, including Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva, and Coleman's Team Hammer House, including Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni, ensued in the ring. The feud escalated backstage when Rua was being escorted to an ambulence. Coleman attempted to apologize to Team Chute Boxe for overcelebrating and for failing to stop when the fight was called, but Chute Boxe, specifically Silva, were unwilling to accept his apology. Tension has been simmering between the two sides since and a rematch between Coleman and Rua was inevitable. Rua has since joined a new team, Universidade de luta (University of Fighting) with his brother, Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Andre Amade, and Mauricio Veio. Team Hammer House is still intact with Baroni, Kevin "The Beast" Randalman, Wes Sims, and Brandon Lee Hinkle representing.

    - UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson marks the UFC debut for Canadian/Korean/French mixed martial artist Denis Kang (31-10-1-2). Kang is a PRIDE veteran with wins over Akihiro "The Magic Man" Gono, Murilo "Ninja" Rua, Amar Suloev, and Andrei Semenov. Between April of 2004 and and November of 2006 Kang fought 23 times without a loss (21-0-1-1), finally losing to Kazuo "Grabaka Hitman" Misaki by split decision at PRIDE Bushido 13--the second time he had fought that night. Kang's last fight was at Raw Combat: Redemption in November where he knocked out UFC veteran Marvin "The Beastman" Eastman in 49-seconds. Kang, who trains with American Top Team, will face Thai boxing specialist Alan "The Talent" Belcher. Belcher has been training with Rich "No Love" Celementi.

    - Former middleweight standout Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann debuts at welterweight at UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson. Kampmann, who trains with Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, last fought at UFC 88: Breakthrough in September where he suffered a knockout loss to Nate "The Great" Marquardt in the first round. The Danish fighter brings a respectable 17-3 record to the division and hopes to follow in the footsteps of Mike "Quick" Swick, another undersized middleweight who dropped to welterweight to maximize his skill set. Kampmann will face Gracie Barra product Alexandre Barros, a Vale Tudo fighter with nine straight wins. The fight will be Barros' UFC debut.

Re: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

I know a guy out of Hendo's camp, Heath Sims, who was telling me that when the UFC tried making this fight in the past Franklin refused to have it at middleweight. I don't know if he was giving me a Henderson point of view comment, but I find it surprising that the fight is at LHW now. I was talking to him about Hendo's training the other day and he said he is having a lot of fun and it is coming along really well because of him not having to cut weight. If things are as good as Heath says, than I think Franklin can be in for a long night.

BTW, the guy is the co-owner of the Team Quest gym out here. It is pretty cool, he gives me a little bit of insight on the Team Quest guys based out of Temecula, CA.

This card seems kinda weak to be PPV, and it might take away some sales from GSP vs Penn. That being said there are some interesting matches on there. I am really interested in how Shogun looks after a long layoff.

It is very weak to be a PPV, I thought for sure it'd be free. I don't think their sales are going to be good on this one. I will probably just end up going to a restaurant to watch it.

I think they meant for this to be free but negotiations with Spike probably fell through. Thats my theory at least.

Re: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

I don't get why the schafer fight is on the main card. I'd rather see the Horn/Palhares fight.

other than that, I want to see the other 4 fights on the main card. I'm really hoping shogun is 100% I think ppl have forgotten about him and he's a top dawg for sure.

I'm also a big fan of Kang too. I don't think he's a title contender but he's an exciting and solid 185er to watch.

Re: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

I'd like to see Kampmann's fight instead of Schafer's, but I guess Red's win over Houston Alexander has earned him a little face time.

Hopefully Kang doesn't get debut jitters like so many PRIDE vets before him. I want him to have success in the UFC.

Re: UFC 93: Franklin vs. Henderson

This event has reportedly sold out, which is great news for the UFC, but not such good news for fans of watching PPV's on TV. We really shouldn't be paying for a weak PPV card like this one (on time delay) but selling it out makes the UFC think we'll swallow anything.

I still don't know what to expect between Franklin & Hendo, I just wish it was a five round fight. I really can't call it right now.
