I know his contract is ay-yi-yi, but, would he fit here? Would this interest KP? Don? (Draft picks to fit?) To Portland: Maggette/Turiaf To Golden State: Outlaw/Frye/Diogu/Sergio Resulting Blazer Roster: Blake/Bayless Roy/Fernandez Magette/Webster/Batum Aldridge/Turiaf/S-Bo Oden/Przybilla Raef
Corey Maggette is a great 1-on-5 scorer, but for an offense and a team whose whole model for success relies on ball movement, Maggette would actually be the last player you'd want on your team. He's possibly the most selfish player in the NBA
I hear ya, but in the right situation - specifically on this tight-knit team - could he effectively be weaned to fit the culture here? Anywho, Sunday morning cup of coffee stuff for yours truly.
I get what you're saying. He is a dynamic wing player, who is almost without peer in his ability to draw fouls in the paint, but he's never shown much interest in playing defense and has always taken a ton of shots. I just don't see his game being a good fit, when what we're really missing from the 3 is consistent perimeter defense -- pretty much what we've seen flashes of in Nicolas' game, but just need on a more veteran level.
I don't like his game. He's more like a scoring guard than the all-around forward Portland needs. Gerald Wallace is a perfect fit on this team and would instantly turn this team into a contender for the Western Conference crown.
Lost in my dislike for your proposal for Maggette was your inclusion of Turiaf. I would LOVE Turiaf as a backup 4 for this team, and he's only due 4 million a year, which is very reasonable for the kind of production he provides.
While I like that he can get to the line with such high frequency, I don't like the way that he needs the ball so much in order to do so. It's a catch 22 that I wouldn't be willing to take a chance on when you factor in his personality. However, I like the idea of adding a guy like Turiaf. He could be Brian Grant v.2
I'd like to have him just so we wouldn't have to play against him. He always seems to play well against us. His bulldog style can be effective, but it wouldn't fit our system at all.
Maggette would make a good bench option. I'd rather have him in the Outlaw role, due to his ability to get to the line. But I doubt he'd accept such a role.
There is only 1 ball to go around. He is a great slasher and at gettin' 2 the line, 2 things we need, but he has a lot of qualities in a player we don't need. GS doesn't like him and is looking to trade him, and was like 20 games into the year, which tells you something. Point.
I like his game. He can slash and is a solid rebounder for a SF. All this talk about him being selfish is a byproduct of playing with teams that mostly go 1-on-1. If we could swing Reaf's contract and change for him, I'm all for it.
Well then, it would seem that Maggette would be a perfect fit, since our offense relies primarily on P&R's and iso's as opposed to actual ball movement.
Ignoring contract issues for the moment.... On the plus side, Maggette doesn't settle for what the defense gives him. He challenges the defense and attacks. The team could really use more of that. On the negative side, he has spent so many years on bad teams, I am afraid his bad (selfish) habits are too ingrained. As Minstrel said - he would be great in the Travis Outlaw role - IF he would accept it!
He didn't care for coming off the bench much in LAC. To be honest, he isn't a good defensive player and I don't know about his attitude. To put it in perspective, I'm not a fan of having anyone on the team that is consistently circling the "Curry Line". For those of you who don't know, Curry Line is where your combined Assists, Steals and Blocks are less than your total Turnovers.
Magette is an offensively improved version of Outlaw...he can score in bunches and gets to the line....frequently.... other than that he is a black hole who plays little to no defense...not b\c he doesn't know how to play correct defense or he gets confuse (as outlaw does) but b\c he chooses not to.... It would be intersting to see how Nate would handle a guy like Maggette...... Not a huge interest, but for Outlaw and spare parts? Yeah, maybe....
