Altafini Gives His Take On Amauri Situation

José Altafini was one of the true football stars of the 1960s and 1970s. The Brazilian-born striker plied his trade for Milan, Napoli, and Juventus, and holds the rare distinction of having played for both the Brazilian and Italian national teams, which was possible at the time because his ancestors were Italian.

The 70-year-old is the ideal person to give his opinion on the situation of Juventus striker Amauri, who like Altafini was born in Brazil but learned his trade at Italian clubs. He has yet to play for either Brazil or Italy, but is certainly good enough to play for both teams; the problem is, he doesn't seem entirely sure which one to choose, although he recently admitted that playing for the Seleçao would be a dream come true.

"I made a mistake to play for both teams," says Altafini, "I would not do it again. Although it was an honor to play for Italy, if I had to go back I would never leave the Brazil shirt again.

Asked what he would do in Amauri's place, he said: "The rules have changed. Amauri can't choose himself, so I would advise him to talk as little as possible about it. That would only be good for him, it would take some of the pressure off after all this media attention on the matter.

"I think he hopes to be called up by [Brazil coach Carlos] Dunga: playing for Brazil would be a kind of revenge towards his country."
