Is it true that the 10-day killed not only the cap but also let the insurance company off the hook? It seems surprising to me that that would also be used to determine whether the insurance or the Blazers paid. barfo
I don't think so. I base my reasoning on the fact that Raef LaFrentz just missed his 41st game of the season due to injury and, as a result, insurance now picks up 80% of his salary.
At least that article was accurate enough to say that it was an independent physician that ruled his injury career-ending, not the Blazers.
Sounds like Wallace is trying to set up an out for himself... Lots of excuses being made in advance why they might not keep Darius around. New coach, couldn't make him fit... Big man coming back from injury, no room in the front court...
I don't see why Memphis would keep Darius at this point. The team is 2-16 since they started the Miles experiment, has lost 7 in a row, and Miles has yet to get an assist this season. Now Wallace brings in Mo Cheeks as part of the coaching package, and we know the history between Darius and Mo. It was a set-up from the get-up, and in the end, it may play a role in Chris Wallace losing his job. That would be awesome, although at that point the Grizzlies may actually bring in someone to make that franchise relevant again.
Darius understands why the Blazers did what they did more profoundly than half of the posters on this site. These are the types of disclaimers lawyers tell you to say. Darius sounds like someone who understands that the NBA is a business. Good for him. A very fair article direct from the center of the controversy. Best of luck to Miles in the future, but he is not an NBA-level player anymore, and I think the end is about near for him as a player.
They almost have to in order to save face. Thus the need to set up excuses in advance to point to later... "We told you all it was coming. It had nothing to do with Portland's salary cap and luxury tax."
Actually, it's eight in a row. The curse started when they elected to play Darius for the final 1:46 of their 20-point blow out win over Dallas. Since then, everything has gone wrong for them. That was the start of the curse and the turning point for their franchise. They have lost every game since and gone from blowing out a good team (Dallas) by 20 to getting blown out by 20 against a bad team (the Knicks). They've also fired their coach (like this was his fault). The franchise is a joke. Their owner is a tightwad who makes Donald Sterling look like a free wheeling big spender, and their GM is an incompetent BOOB. They are getting what they deserve. If they think screwing the Blazesr out of cap space is going to somehow help them land a big time free agent, they're delusional. The last time they had an all-star he begged and pleaded to be traded. As soon as Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo can leave, they will and won't bother to even look in the rear view mirror. The team is on pace for their third straight 22 win season (and even that's looking optimistic these days - thanks to the curse). What free agent worth a shit would even consider signing with this loser organization? You reap what you sow and this is what happens when you have a penny-pinching owner and a jerk-off GM - and the curse. BNM
