Wenger On Arshavin: 'It's All Quiet'

Despite reports emanating from Russia earlier, a deal has not yet been done between Arsenal and Zenit St-Petersburg for Andrei Arshavin.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dispelled reports from Russia that the Gunners had agreed a fee with Zenit St-Petersburg at last to secure the services of Russian superstar Andrei Arshavin.

The Frenchman was his usual calm and collected self as he was quizzed by reporters at a press conference regarding the move, and he questioned the veracity and reliability of the reports that were coming from Arshavin's homeland.

"There's no news about Arshavin and not about anybody else. That's why I cannnot give you anything at the moment. It's all quiet," said Wenger.

Reports that a fee had been agreed were "Not true," Wenger asserted, before continuing: "We are not close to concluding any transfers at the moment. I'm sorry to disappoint you but that's the reality."

As for whether the deal could now go ahead, with the clock ticking as the closure of the transfer window looms in six days' time, Wenger was equivocal.

"I don't know frankly, because time is getting short," he said.

"I'm more focused to win the game tomorrow."

Persistent reporters continued to ask about potential transfers, including whether Wenger was about to move for Manchester City's highly-rated centre-back Micah Richards.

"No, we have not gone for him," Wenger asserted. "That cannot help us win the game tomorrow. It's not a big concern."

As for the various, seemingly conflicting, reports emanating from Zenit, Wenger advised reporters to listen only to official sources, just as he does.

He added: "I cannot be responsible for the statements of other clubs. I believe what I see and hear directly."
